tips for new owners

hi all, i just purchased this car but have been so busy at work that i havent really looked into all the things (recall issues) pertaining to this great car.

can all the veteran owners out there give some input, ie: what are some of the issues that have occurred in the last year that i should be concerned about? I keep running into a thread about "reflashing the ECU?" (what's that?) basically if anyone can offer a list of the things that have to be addressed on my next visit to the dealer.

thanks all!

-despite the days ups and downs, nothing beats the thrill i get when i get behind the wheel of my new 8, after a hard days work.

Re: tips for new owners

Well, doc, based on your own words, you've already discovered the most important "thing" about this great car - the thrill, the grin, etc.

If you want to know more about the not so nice things, I suggest doing searches on the following items, and reading to your heart's content.

"flooding"
"gas AND mileage"

There are other more minor/less prevalent issues like some people having problems with the A/C, or sticky e-brakes in cold weather, or M/T bugs requiring serious labor, even replacement of the tranny. But all in all, you have to remember, this forum is more than anything a complaint forum (just ask me, I already have a reputation among some as a complainer :p ). This is not a bad thing - people have issues and they post so they can learn and inform others, but there is a selection bias, since you won't see as many posts talking about how trouble fre it is. This site monitors and records "events" and normal operation is not an "event," so this site is a filter for bad news

In short, while reading the threads related to the above and other topics, DON'T panic.

Enjoy the car - I just got mine too

The issues that have been most discussed.
- Flooding : let your engine warm up before shutting down, especially in cold weather.
- Bad Mileage : drive like a granny if you want reasonable mileage.
- Oil change : check your oil regularly.
- Oil type : don't use synthetic oil; no wait, use dyno oil; Whatever! IMHO it doesn't really matter, although Mazda suggests using dyno oil.
- Overstated horsepower (you don't really want to know about that)
- IkeWRX : Don't pay too much attention to him. Just a WRX owner who loves the 8 but wouldn't admit it.

You can basically get any imaginable info on the RX8 in here. One of the best thing about the RX8 is the RX8club.com community.

Enjoy your ride.
