tint on rx8

just to let everyone know, if you want your car to look even all around, get it darker in the back. the angle of the back window makes it look lighter.

i am getting my tint redone, and was wondering. whether i should stay ceramic or not.

i'm hearing many different "myths" and would like a strong answer.

i've heard that metallic appears darker, and that ceramic appears darker. which appears darker, or is it the same.

metallic will interfere BARELY so its not worth getting ceramic.

and i need an opinion. 20% is a bit too light, 5% is too noticeable (or is it)...what do i do?

Zerotide 03-04-2009 09:51 AM

Nebraska has pretty stringent laws on tint. My old Audi had 15% all the way around which was pretty damn dark and I never got pulled over for it. My dad got me tinting for my 8 as part of a birthday gift and wouldn't let me go darker than legal so I have 25% up front and 20% on the rear windshield and windows. It's dark enough for me. Can't see in at night and you can't see much during the day.

I'd recommend not going much darker than legal.

jones75254 03-04-2009 12:45 PM

If legal on the fronts is 25% (just an example), i would go 30%. Dont give cops a reason to pull u over. Plus, if the legal is 25 and you get 25, you have decent chance of the cop's tint meter registering ur tint a hair over and will nail you. Going 5% more will just ensure you legality and its not that noticeable. Normally the cops dont give a crap about the big rear window or even the small suicide door windows due to being so small, cops normally dont even think they are "functional" or detrimental to vision.

kersh4w 03-04-2009 01:15 PM

5% over?

lol, in maryland you'd have to have 40% all the way around then. and whats the point of that?

i just keep my sunroof open. (the interior sliding thing.) that lets more light into the cabin and makes the tint seem not so dark. when closed however, it looks like my car was tinted far darker.

wow wow wow thank you for that.

i might consider 5% with leaving my sunroof opoen during the day haha yeah 20% is no prob, officer said as long as i can see what you're doing you'll be fine, or if you don't give us a reason to pull you over you'll be fine.

Zerotide 03-04-2009 02:19 PM

That's one cop though... he might not care but another cop who sees a young kid in a sports car might find anything wrong with the car he can to teach you a lesson. :icon_no2:

greg985 03-04-2009 02:41 PM

wow its just tint, go as dark as you want. As long as your not acting a fool no cop will bother, and if your really worried just get papers

Rhawb 03-04-2009 03:06 PM

Dang, 20% is too light? I live in Florida and I still think that's about as dark as I'd be comfortable with. I had 20% on a previous car and I had to roll down my windows to back into my garage at night. Nobody could see more than a silhouette inside either.

Razor Rolla 03-04-2009 05:30 PM

20% is a perfect level in my opinion

mmats69 03-04-2009 09:05 PM

go with the legal limit in your state. Get smoke tint as it appears darker than others. Here is a pic of mine with 35%.

elcolombiano91 03-04-2009 09:11 PM

I have my windows 5% all around. In my opinion I think the car looks better and i havnt got pulled over for that yet(knock on wood)

+1 20% is a really good level. Not too hard to see out at night and you probably won't be pulled over for it.

Unfortunatly, that won't fly in California :(

Jedi54 03-05-2009 12:25 PM

yeah, 5% up front is asking for it in CA.
I've got 5% on all the rear windows and I think it's 15 or 20% up front. Even that is pushing it

Socket7 03-05-2009 12:28 PM

I have 35% in front, and 20 in the back. Looks pretty slick.

Any tint on the front windows is illegal in CA.

correct! Most tint websites have the wrong info on them.

Atilla 03-05-2009 12:38 PM

F*ck that - LIMO all the way around including windshield...

that's how pimps do it...

visibility is over-rated

Jedi54 03-05-2009 12:39 PM

HAHA, that reminds me of the thread where some chick (I think it was a girl) got all super pissed that the cops towed her car.
We later found out she had the whole front windshield tinted. You guys remember that thread?!

Atilla 03-05-2009 12:40 PM

^ROFL!!

that's why i posted my comment hahaha!

Vaad 03-05-2009 12:41 PM

in England .. I'm sure the law states you can have what ever tint you want on Rear and Rear/Side windows .. however the Front Front/Side windows must remain tint free.

Yea no shit, i searched the other day about the law in Cali and read that 70% was the legal limit. I mean, getting that light of tint would hardly be worth it anyways but still....Cali just sux ass when it comes to emissions/vehicle laws. I heard (read it somewhere) Cali was on its way to even stricter emissions laws as well.

Jedi54 03-05-2009 04:38 PM

yup, our Governator is determined to make us the "greenest" state in the country. :banghead:

Atilla 03-05-2009 04:41 PM

yeah...cali is gonna have some pretty strict laws in the near future...

but as most of us here in cali know....we'll probably just say screw it and pay the fix it ticket...

Jedi54 03-05-2009 05:02 PM

just find a totalled 8, buy the front 2 windows off it. You'll never have to take the tint off, just swap out the glass for the inspection.

I know of at least ONE cool guy who did that. ;)

dozer 03-05-2009 05:03 PM

NO way jedi! your bullsh*ttin! wtf

I think the problem is that the glaze that comes on auto glass is already at 70%. So putting any kind of tint film or spray on the windows puts you below 70% and makes it illegal.

Rear windows can be 0% for all they care though, and you can have a 4 inch strip of 5% along the top of your windshield.

jones75254 03-05-2009 06:43 PM

^^That makes sense

elcolombiano91 03-06-2009 08:32 PM

how often do you get pulled over? and how well is visibility at night?

i'm considering 5%

i noticed you are in houston too!

iwannagofast 03-07-2009 11:42 AM

I live in Philadelphia and drive to the Poconos which is about 2.5 hours drive. I've been pulled over so many times its not funny and only once in my old car did I get a ticket for my tint. And he said that's why he pulled me over, even though I was doing 80 right past him. Its not even a moving violation so it's just a fine. Get it as dark as you want, just make sure you roll all your windows down and turn your dome lights on before the cop even gets out of the car. They look at it as you're not a complete dick. Thats all most of them care about. Knowing they're not walking up to a gun pointed at them.

seshiru 10-01-2009 11:04 PM

Can you guys post more pics of your cars with tints? Especially huper optik or wincos tint. I want to see how dark it is.

RyansRx8 10-01-2009 11:06 PM

I have 5% in the rear and 35% in the front, darkest you can go with being perfectly legal :)

Atilla 10-01-2009 11:15 PM

<==Limo in the rear and 20% in the front

been pulled over a couple of times :D:

but screw it...a sunlight silver w/out tint looks kinda...

RyansRx8 10-01-2009 11:19 PM

^^^^ looks kinda:fruit:

Atilla 10-01-2009 11:20 PM

^pretty much.

Tint was the first thing i did after i bought the car...:bigok:

RyansRx8 10-01-2009 11:23 PM

5% baby!!! Thats what I had on my camaro. Limo tint FTW!!!!!!!!!! Just make sure you roll down your windows near cops or when you get pulled over...

RedRocket8 10-02-2009 12:37 AM

^^ wow 5% is pushing it hahaha, but i bet it looks hott.... yeah everytime i see a cop i roll both my windows down....

xun4gvn4everx 10-02-2009 12:40 AM

It was so dark, I had to roll down the windows to back up. And the review mirror became useless. But it was great for road dome!!!

Chronisseur 10-02-2009 01:57 AM

^ Pics or it didn't happen. Nah, just kidding. We don't need to see that.

But I'd like to see more photos of people's tint and what % it is. I still need to do mine, because as of right now I'm a sunlight silver owner looking a little :fruit: without tint.

RedRocket8 10-02-2009 02:02 AM

I have that same problem. At night is the worst I can't tell what or who is behind me while backing up. so worth the look though

Gr8Bullet 10-02-2009 02:23 AM

I got 5% in the rear and 20% up front. Had cops pull up next to my car and say hi to me with my windows up. Never been pulled over at all. Cali is pretty strict tho. But fugg it! Lol

stephenti 10-02-2009 02:32 AM

I've had my last ~10 cars or so tinted 35% all around, and 50% front windshield. 50% front is almost invisible, but I do it for the sun protection. Gives you great visibility at night, great sun protection all around, and no issues with LE even in IL/CA. Personally, I don't care for un-even tint degrees front-rear, and limo tint is just not safe at night (tried it once on M Coupe to match black roof, hated it), legal or otherwise. Ceramic tint is lighter than regular metallic.

Here's the RX8 with the above treatment:

Here's 35% ceramic on side, seeing through 50% front:

Here's 35% metallic tint on side, seeing through 50% front:

rodjonathan 10-02-2009 08:10 AM

i had 5 all around and 75 up front on my 8 but it started becoming a pain to drive so i switched to 5 in the back 20 up front and 75 on the windshield and it feels great now

Yea, I was thinking of getting tints between 15% or 20%. I also have a VR. Do you have any pics with the 8 tinted? Here in Miami 20% might not be enough.. :dunno:

Anyone care to hazard a guess on what I have? The PO did them and said they were illegal in CA, not sure if that's true or not; never been pulled over for them.

Attachment 271701

That's out in sunlight (look at my taillight and rear bumper), so they look lighter than they should. I think they look sick, especially my BLACK rear window, but they're also too dark at night, and my car still gets hot if I leave it outside... worst of both worlds.

xun4gvn4everx 10-02-2009 01:02 PM

^ I guess 20%
