As per the Escort Radar FAQ: "Where should I mount my radar detector?

For maximum performance, your detector should be mounted level on your windshield, with a clear view of the road.

Note: Do not mount your detector behind the tinted area at the top of your windshield. This will reduce its laser performance dramatically."

I do not know how it will affect the V1, but I am sure if you check their site, they might have something similar.

well the V1 works out the back as well, and I want to tint the back, but I guess if the little blue at the top messes it up, the 30% at the back will destroy it lol.

I don't think the tint would help it as far as laser is concerned.

I've got Limo tint on mine and I've still picked up Ka bands coming up behind me. (Escort 9500i)

I think the problem is with laser, not X, K, or Ka bands. Symbioticgenius, you just need to ask yourself:

1. Realistically, how often will I be lased from behind?
2. If I am lased, is there really anything I can do about it?

the odds of getting hit with laser from behind are very slim

Speaking of speeding, has anyone seen in their owners manual how it describes that the car has a 9k redline and then says observe all traffic laws.

1. According to everyone here not very likely, but the only cops that have ever caught me came from behind in traffic.

2. Depends on how fast I'm going.

It might not matter much I suppose, I'm just gonna get this anyway http://www.blinderxtreme.com/

Only time I was caught for speeding, I was caught from behind. Don't know if that means I was lasered, but whatever.

That's not the point.
Tint hinders reception.

The question is did you pick up the officer before he picked up you.

ObEwAn... You still have some learning to do.

By the way get that AP from MM before you have to wait 3 weeks!

now, wouldn't it depend on the type of tint? if it were just dye tint it should be fine, right? it would be the metallic tints that i would imagine might cause a problem.

You should have gotten a Passport 8500 x50.
Mine can detect laser through 5% tint and 10 ft of solid concrete. When it's raining. Raining solid concrete.

You know... all the advice that Symbioticgenius has received in this thread about "....limo the 8 will that negate or hinder the V1....". I am beginning to think he needs to be hit with the "laser".

no my young Padawan, it is you who is in need of more training. Ka band doesn't pick up a specific car, it aims in a general direction.
In that case, I saw the Ka band before he was anywhere near me (he was over 2 lanes), by the time he got beside me, I was below 65 mph.

In other words: I picked him up before he picked me up.

Obeewan, my young one.

Do not rush to conclusion. Listen to the force.

Think about all wave lengths. They are all corrupted. The laser will get you.

Didn't you learn that lesson when I caught you from behind?

Seems to me that your missing a hand!

The tint will have no effect on radar. It is micro waves. The posts are correct about the laser. To have an early warning of laser, it must pick up the scatter from the laser from hitting other targets. The tint can weaken the already weak signal coming through.

Remember one thing. I was a police officer for several years. Half of the people I wrote speeding tickets to had radar detectors. I did not turn on the radar until I saw a speeder and I estimated the speed above what I was looking for (usualy 15 mph above the posted speed for me). So, when the detector picked up radar, it was too late. It was just a warning that they had been caught. And sometimes while I was on patrol and did not want to write tickets, I would ride with the radar on just to try to get people to slow down.

Great points. I'd like to add that sophisticated users of radar detectors understand the odds. Radar detectors are good for one thing: to not get what I call "the stupid ticket". There are times when I'll pick up a POP or a short burst of Ka, and I'll check my speed. It's the insane speeder that doesn't heed when the radar detector goes off. This is why I don't understand the big deal with Valentine. Who the hell cares what direction the cop is coming from? THERE'S A COP IN THE AREA. CHECK YOUR SPEED. If you're stupid (or psychotic) enough to speed after you catch a whiff, regardless of if he's in front, behind or underneath you, then you deserve a ticket.

After a year with a V1, I'm still not convinced of the need to actually COUNT the false alarms.......

No, I haven't. But I'm also not "attacking" the V1... you do see my point, right?

I didnt really have time to read the other responses, but you should try to keep it out of the window tint. I have a Escort 9500i and I love it, but there's a few things you should know (I got a ticket for like 140mph in a 55mph with it )

1.) Lasers = You're screwed. Get a Laser Jammer if they are legal in your state. I believe they are here (in GA). Radar jammers =/= laser jammer

2.) Watch for off duty cops.... they call buddies to sit up ahead, with lasers =/

3.) Don't speed too much, take it from someone with 22 points on their license (until I get done with the 100 hours of community service, which should drop it to 12 points)

Most cops are going exclusively laser, so once again, BE CAREFUL... I get hit with lasers a lot and sometimes I never see the cop... I've even gotten hit by one in stand still traffic.
