Stick with what your local laws allow.
Around here, it's 35%. That's what I currently have on my RX-8. I used to have 20% tint all the way around on my Eclipse GS-T. Got pulled over by a Statie at night and was given a $250 ticket. He could have given me a $500 ticket for the 2 front windows, but he said he was gonna write me up for one only. He told me to remove all the tint and show up at court, then they'd drop the ticket. I have a court date on 07/13.
The thing is, I already traded in the car for my 8. I don't know how the hell I'm gonna prove to them that I took the tint off. I actually did have it re-tinted legally.
Yeah, your car will look cool with 20% or darker tint, but I don't think it's worth all the hassles. It's just a waste of time and money.

Not to derail, but do you have the paperwork, or could you perhaps get the installers word / statement that you had this done? Or was it a DIY thing?

"Sir I got rid of that ricer car. Nothing but problems with that thing. I've decided to get a classy RX-8 and I have every intention of keeping it legal. Its outside with legal tint right now if you would like to see it."
Sorry I had to bust your chops. I actually would of killed for a GS-T about 6 years ago.

The cars not registered under your name anymore, therefore, it is not your responsibility. Its even better (or easier to prove) then having the car re-tinted. Heres what I'd say.

Anyway, within a span of four months prior to when I traded the car in (which was like 5 weeks ago), I got pulled over in the Eclipse five times. One of which times I even got charged with drag racing on top of speeding. The ticket was $750 total. It was just unreal. I wasn't drag racing anyone, btw. Some loser in a riced out Civic tried to tailgate me while I was doing 95mph. Long story short, I had to hire a lawyer and they dropped the drag racing charge when I went to court. I still have to pay the speeding fine ($200).
I loved my Eclipse, and still do, actually. I miss the torque and how I could get thrown back in the seat when the turbo got spooled up. But I'd had it for quite a long time, so I was ready for something new. Hopefully, the 8 will last as long as the Eclipse did. If it wasn't for the troubles with cops, I'd keep the Eclipse and drive it into the ground.

I've got:
Rears and back window = 18%
Front windows = 35%
Front windshield = 45%
Looks very nice, good overall compromise between tint/attention from po-po/night vis

I have 15% all around with 50% on the front windshield.
Getting pulled over is really a matter of where you live. Here in Colorado the cops dont care. Might get a warning at most.
I would probably get a ticket for 5% limo tint though, according to my tint shop.
Heres my tinted car. 15% or even 20 is really dark. 5% is overkiill IMO

I guess it really depends on where you live when it comes to tints. Around here, it's a real PITA. I had to pay this guy an extra $50 so that he could pass my "illegally tinted" Eclipse when I needed an annual inspection sticker. And not every guy at every inspection station is even willing to do it. And then the Staties...there are just too many of 'em around here. For all the hassles, it's really not worth it to tint darker than 35% here.

here in NC i had 25% but the legal limit is 35% so I couldnt pass my yearly inspection. I had to rip it all off just to pass inspection. I bought the car used late last year so the guy who owned it before me had it put on below the legal limit. Sucks, but like i said, i couldn't pass our state's yearly inspection with below legal limit.
I dont know how others from the same state like notears gets by with it unless they retint after inspection every year or know someone to pay off to pass.
