Time for new tires!

Hi everyone:

Going to be putting new tires on my RX-8. At 3,000 miles after delivery, I switched the OEM all-summer Bridgestones out for a set of Pirelli PZero Nero M+S tires. They've been terrific - car is decent in the snow, terrific in the dry and acceptable on the wet.

But, with 33,000 miles on the clock they are getting down there on wear - about 1/8" above the wear bars - They still have probably 7500 miles left in them, but I don't believe in letting tires get all the way worn out. Besides, they were pretty dicey in the last snow we got.

When I got them, I considered Kuhmo Ecsta ASX's and Continental's HP all-season tire (don't remember what it was called). I see AVON has something out now, as well as Hankook and a few others.

Anyone got a good all-season tire recco? Absence of a iron clad recco, I'll probably go with the Pirelllis again - they have held up well, and still look great too. Also, I run an "up-size" in these (technically a +0 upgrade) - I switched from the stock 225/45-18s to 245-40/18s.

Stew

this?

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....e1=yes&place=2

really really good reviews on tirerack, with TONS of miles reported, so it's a proven tire design

even i would seriously consider this tire if not for the fact that I DO take my 8 onto the track and i only have funds for one set of wheel/tires for the car lol

Toyo Proxes 4s are probably the only high performance all season I will ever buy again. I've tried the Contis, the Pirellis, and the Kuhmos, and the Toyos were the best as far as handling goes and the sidewalls don't feel like mush. I'd seriously suggest giving them a shot.

I just picked up the Bridgestone Potenza Re960 Pole Position AS tires. So far they have been great! It rained the same day I got them, and the car didn't even flinch going around curves on the wet roads. I have also tried them in some mild slush, with no issues. I am not sure how they are going to be in the snow, but so far so good. They are a little expensive, but seem to be well worth it, and have a 40k tread life.

I'd look at the Avons as well as the RE960s that some people are complimenting.

I have the Pirellis also, and honestly I wouldn't swap with anything else. Granted, I don't have a lot of experience driving the 8 in the snow, but I love these tires.

Michelin makes a great all-season Pilot-sport. Loved them on my old SLK. But they were very expensive, and I would have liked more life out of them.

If you are going for a summer tire, nothing beats the Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 in my opinion

I bought a set of Goodyear Eagle F1 GS3D's due to good reviews on Tirerack and will replace my worn-out Dunlops next week. I have yet so see a tire review of these from an RX-8 owner, so when I have them on for a while (past the break-in period) I will hopefully be the first to post a review on the forum.

You won't be disappointed. I had 2 sets of them on my IS300 (the 2nd set was free courtesy of Kauffman's warranty). The difference was night and day with those tires compared to the stock Bridgestone RE040s (RX-8 owners should know that those Bridgestones are pathetic for summer performance rubber, especially considering their wear)

Im 100% against what you suggested.

Toyo Proxes4 was the worst piece of **** All-Season tires I've ever had. 3 of them with blown up sidewall ....

Switched to BridgeStone RE960 A/S Pole Position. No problems, Excellent Dry, Good Wet, and Good Snow.

about 8K miles still running strong.

I'm running the Avon A/S 245/40/18, I've had them for over a year and so far I am happy with them but don't have a really point of comparison. They are great in the summer and wet handling is good. Snow around the city was OK but they did get stuck in a couple of inch of snow on an iced driveway in Michigan.

I see your not to far away so if you what to look at the tires and take a test drive your welcome to PM me, I live in Lincolnwood.

After 7,000 miles I have never noticed any noise from the Avons. I had to think about it so I guess that is a good indicator.

Re Road Noise, my Pirelli's did a HUGE difference in road noise when they were new - like every other tire, they are getting noisy as they age, but man, those Pirelli's were quiet brand new.

Thanks all that posted - I hadn't thought of those Bridgestones, so I'll look at those. I'd say most likely I'll go with the Conti's ... I like the rim protector bar on those, and they have great ratings. Although the Pirellis have a badass tread on them ...

That's pretty odd. This is a fairly popular tire with Evo guys and I've never heard of such a problem. It's a safe bet many of us are putting more strain on the sidewalls of our tires than you are. Did you contact Toyo, 3 sidewalls blowing out (is that what you're saying happened?) is not just something you say 'oh darn' about and buy a different set of tires.

nycgps and Mr Ex:

Are the Potenzas compatible with the TPMS? Discount tire direct doesn't list them because of it being verified.

If not, do you just have to live with the warning light (and beep), or do you need to get it disabled somehow? The RE960 is my top choice for an all-season tire. I need to get some before it gets cold and my stockers turn into hockey pucks.

Buddy of mine w/a subie legacy GT swears by the Toyo Proxy's as well. Maybe those NYC streets are just tire eaters? I know they make me fear for my tires anytime I'm there.

I am currently running BridgeStone RE960 A/S Pole Positions, and they are great. I have not yet had a chance to run them in snow, but I can vouch for them in dry and wet conditions! Tirerack is a great source either way.

There may be cases where the tires would interfere with the TPMS, but I don't think so. I believe it's way more rim dependent than the tires...........someone please correct me if I'm wrong!
I have RE050A Pole Positions and I have TPMS and am very please with them so far.

I've only seen it snow in Tampa one time while I was living there going to USF. You may have a long wait!
