Question Ticking When Cold

I Have A Ticking Noise Coming From Under The Car When Cold. After The Engine Warmes Up A Few Minutes The Noise Goes Away. I When't To The Dealer And Asked My Salesmen To Start Another Rx-8, And It Made The Same Ticking Noise Till It Warmed Up. I'm Guesing This Noise Is Normal, But For Peace Of Mind I Would Like To Know What Is Making The Ticking Noise. I Dont Trust Dealers Putting Their Paws On My Car So I Hope You Guys Can Help. Thanks

This is normal. I too was under the impression that something was wrong with my RX-8 till I heard from other 8 owners that this takes place with there 8's too.

This is the first time I've ever seen someone put their whole post in title case. It's actually beyond title case with the articles even capitalized. I've seen all caps (SCREAMING!!) and all lower case (i hate the lower case i), but never title case. It's surprising how disconcerting it is. I know I'm nit-picking, but it's so unusual that I had to say something.

Anyway, I've never heard this on my 8, but I heard it almost every time I started my Probe when it was cold. Like someone else said, it's probably just the normal heat expansion of the exhaust. I wonder if you could find the spot causing the tick and lubricate it to get the tick to go away.

A good way to hear this sound is to, if you can pull up next to a wall or about 8ft away, well your 8 is still cold and your in your 8 with your windows down then you can hear this loud.

It isn't the exhaust, it is a mechanical sound, seems to be a belt or chain driven accessory. May be inside the engine, but I don't think so...

The air pump that injects air into the exhaust while operating in open loop mode.

Could be... seems to happen only for 20-30 seconds when the car first starts, and only when it is really cold (well below freezing). Who knows!

While you were there did you ask them what the noise was?

Well, I, for one, did not get it. Would you be so kind as to explain?

there is a function of the forum that turns all caps posts(caps lockon) into first letter caps posts. it was off for a while and now its on again. he tried to post all caps

and no its not expansion ticks

crankwalk is the most dreaded defect in the 2g DSM turbo world. In a nutshell all it is...

when there is play in the crank angle sensor and moves or "walks"...

many people try to fix it but the only real way to fix the problem is to do a 1g 4g63 swap. Basically putting in a motor from a 1st gen dsm into a 2g. Not all 2g turbo DSMs were affected but very many were and a lot of them not under warranty especially because the problem did not occur until the motors hit the 60-65k mile mark.

The best way to know if it was crankwalk was if you could hear a ticking noise coming from the engine when depressing the clutch. Or, if the clutch pedal would stick after a hard left turn.

You can read more about it here:
http://members.shaw.ca/costall/1000Q...hatiscrankwalk

I just hope nothing like this happens to our cars

See... the dealership tells us its normal but they dont know what causes the ticking? I've never heard of a good ticking noice (Ticking = BAD). Does anyone know for certain what exactly causes the ticking? Does anyone have written proof from Mazda? I am in no way saying its something drastic like the crankwalk issue with the DSMs but crankwalk showed its symptoms and didnt occur on DSMs until about 60k miles then the engine would need replacement in which case by then the warranty was expired.

I just hope something doesnt come up later after the rx8 warranty expires. I'll probably trade the car in when the warranty comes to an end for a new vehicle anyway.
