It is surprising that you didn't know that they were illegal. Well I guess you know now.

CA CA Vehicle Code

Here is the actual law in California. No Blue For You!!!

25106. (a) Any motor vehicle may be equipped with lighted white or
amber cowl or fender lamps on the front. Any vehicle may be equipped
with not more than one amber side lamp on each side near the front,
nor more than one red side lamp on each side near the rear. The
light source of each such lamp shall not exceed four standard
candlepower.
(b) Lamps meeting requirements established by the department for
side-marker or combination clearance and side-marker lamps may be
installed on the sides of vehicles at any location, but any lamp
installed within 24 inches of the rear of the vehicle shall be red,
and any lamp installed at any other location shall be amber.

24003. No vehicle shall be equipped with any lamp or illuminating
device not required or permitted in this code, nor shall any lamp or
illuminating device be mounted inside a vehicle unless specifically
permitted by this code. This section does not apply to:
(a) Interior lamps such as door, brake and instrument lamps, and
map, dash, and dome lamps designed and used for the purpose of
illuminating the interior of the vehicle.
(b) Lamps needed in the operation or utilization of those vehicles
mentioned in Section 25801, or vehicles used by public utilities in
the repair or maintenance of their service, or used only for the
illumination of cargo space of a vehicle while loading or unloading.

(c) Warning lamps mounted inside an authorized emergency vehicle
and meeting requirements established by the department.

Grab a copy of the Rules book from your local DMV/BMV and keep it in your glove box. Aside from the proof of insurance, thats the only documentation the state gives you associated with laws. The state has failed to clearly document for you that its illegal to have those color sidemarkers on your vehicle. Fix it, take photos and show up to court with a copy of the rules book. All other state laws are clearly marked (speed limits, age for pumping gas and so on), there is no state documentation issued to you when you purchase the vehicle either. So you shouldn't even have to pay the processing fee.

The rules book is pretty useful for obscure stuff, just don't display it when you clearly violated the law (red light, speeding etc).

Cool! The state never sent me an official rule book saying that it's illegal to rob banks. Too bad none of them have any money these days. Wish I had known (or officially not known) that last year.

Um, yea ok. So its legal for me to Ghost Ride da whip? Mount machine guns/oil slick/smoke screen like Spy Hunter? What if I fly to other states, when I get off the plane do they have to give me a DMV book if I am going to drive, or can I do whatever I want?

I never received a manual either for just day to day living in my state and associated laws, so can i take a dump on my neighbors lawn like Jim Carey?

Why would you have blue? It is distracting for other drivers. It is yelling to cops to pull you over. Stick with white leds.

California Highway Patrol has a pretty comprehensive brochure that covers street mods. A lot of cops out here carry them and will give you one along with your citation. Push hard, four copies.

You can see CHP Form 933 here:

TBH, I wouldn't ever put blue LEDs on the outside of my car, but I still wouldn't have thought I'd get pulled over. I guess this forum is also a teacher

Couldn't have said it better myself. In the long run, this should barely be a blip on your life's radar. Fix the corners, pay your fine, and go for a nice long ride to ease your mind.
