Whenever I am shifting into 1st, at a dead stop, I'll hear a very small "thunk". Is, or did, anyone have this problem?

I'll shift it into 1st, and then when I take it out and put it back in, it doesn't do it. Only after coming to a rolling stop is when I hear it.
Also, it's very soft. For example, if I have the radio on softly, I probably won't hear it, but I can slightly feel it.

 

Mine does that too.

 

mine does that on my 2nd trans...never did it with the first.....its not right but the dealer wont replace my tranny again because of it....

 

I don't think it’s a problem. Don't forget that we are practically sitting on the transmission so it’s quite normal to feel the slightest vibration.

Anyone else?

 

Mine does it also......in reverse as well. I think that it's the syncros not meshing perfectly. Not sure if it's a long-term concern or not.

 

Well... at least I'm not the only one with that problem... I don't know if that's a good or bad thing...

 

i was actually just about to post with this question. but it makes me feel better as well that its not just me.

 

Mine has done this from day one. Almost like the clutch isnt fully disengaged. I have felt this on customers cars also, so I guess thats just the way it is.

 

i get the same thunk rarely. Doesnt seem like a bad thing, my car is running fine. Anyone else know of this?

 

I thought that was how a manual transmission is supposed to sound. A little click-clack into 1st from a stop sign.

 

this sound is normal and nothing to worry about...remember behind all that shiny stuff is actual mechanical linkages, gears, and other pieces of metal that aren't completely silent when moved around. Most luxury cars won't have this sound because noise insulation is part of why it will cost so much.
Just turn your radio off and drive for a day; you'll hear all sorts of noises that are completely normal. We just never hear them when we're rockin' out, or screaming at the redline.
Take it from me, its my job to listen to noises....I'm a Sonar Tech. aboard a submarine.

 

guys... it's the self test for abs. Perfectly normal. It happens to all our cars.

 

mysql, they're not talking about the thunk when you first move the car. They're talking about the thunking actually shifting it into 1st.

 

Ah I see. Mine does that too on shifting to first, sometimes. I still wouldn't worry about it.

 

isnt that 'thunk' sound into first, the cars way of checking its ABS? i swore i read that somewhere on here...


but mine does that too. only time it doesnt go 'thunk' is when i blip the throttle a bit to get into gear. Try that.

 

It's a machine it makes noises. Seriously, thats just the sound of the gears moving around. Don't worry about it.

 

If the gears and shafts are perfectly lined up there is no any noise. Most of the time they are not. Its random. And nothing to worry about.

mine use to do it before i had the transmission replaced. but i've only driven the car 70 miles since so it hasn't even gotten broke in. will let you know if it does

 

I get it aswell. When I ease it into first it doesnt do it. No big deal. Your just too close to the tranny

 

Bingo. It's the sound as the non-aligned gears slot together, and nothing to worry about.

 

I hear/feel that in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd at times.
