Thinking of buying an RX-8
Considering buying a 2006 RX-8. Will probably go with the 6-speed auto as I will just keep this car completely stock and don't plan to race it. I will have had my license for10 years by the time I purchase with no accidents or tickets. I know insurance varies but any ideas on what I might pay?
I am also a bit worried about maintenance. Just looking at ebaymotors, I don't see a single RX-8 over 90,000 miles for instance. I understand it important to keep oil topped off - which oil should I use and how often between a full oil change? Like I said, I will be buying a 2006, most likely around ~30,000 miles. Are there any important recalls associated with a 2006 model that I should be aware of. How would I know if certain recalls have been completed on the car other than taking a dealers word for it?

You can take a dealer's word for it on recalls being done. Mazda keeps track of that stuff, and a dealer will look up what the database says. They're supposed to put stickers under the hood, but not all dealers do that.
Siginficant recalls/updates for '06 are 4602f and MSP16 ECU flashes.

I know can see why guys get tired of these questions. I have come to the conclusion if you can not do any research on your questions in this forum and not find your answers then the RX8 is not for you. My biggest concern is when you say 'worried about maintenance' then my recommendation to you would be STAY AWAY from the RX8. For that matter any sports car.

Ive had my 06 for almost a year now, got in in febuary with 31k miles for $14,800 OTD which i thought was a good deal, it now has 41k miles and the only thing i have had to do other then oil change, is the common false coolant light, which most people just disconnect the sensor but i was still under warranty so i got it fixed. Hope this helps you in your search for an 8.

I've posted some questions - isn't that doing research? My concerns are valid - you read a lot about people needing engine changes at 35,000 miles but I am assuming this is more 04-05s and also people that were running without topping off oil.

to the other guy. Why should the maintenance scare him away. Oh no, he has to top off the oil, change spark plugs every 30k miles, and redline it every day. He's not racing it. This car is not much different than any other if you ask me.

I pay 76 bucks a month full coverage. 2004 WB. My deductible is 500 bones. As for maintenance, it is the nature the car. Take care of her and she will take care of you. Except for the ones that blow, can't do much about that. As long as you are under 100k, you are good, you get a free engine.

I pay around 860 a year for insurance with AAA, and that is with a second car discount. been driving 13 years and no tickets or accidents on record (last one was over 5 years ago). This is for full coverage with a 100 deductible.
I also claim that my saturn (the POS in the garage with 276,000 miles which doesn't even run) is my daily driver and that the RX-8 only gets 5000 miles a year.
Tell them that it will always be garaged, there are a ton of little tidbits that get your insurance down by 10 or 20 bucks each time.
My car has been completely maintenance free and it still runs as good as when I got it (32000 miles later). There is very little that can break on the engine, and even if it does, all rx-8s have a 100,000 mile 8-year engine warranty, so as long as you get it young, it'll be guaranteed to last for a long time. Just stay away from the 04s.
Also, real men and women drive manual trannies, that is unless you're going to commute in stop and go traffic and nothing else. The 06's paddle shift feature IS cool tho.
