lol.. you guys are too funny with the girl pics. Definitely synthetic is the way to go.. I was just at costco today and saw that mobile 1 5w30 is on sale for 30 bux for 6 quarts! Hmmm. I guess that's enough for an oil change plus 2 quarts for refilling every 1k miles.. hmmm.. 30 bux per oil change.. is that worth it?

Read about mobil 1 and rotaries first. that's one of the reasons mazda can't say to use any synthetic. A search here will tell you all you need to know.

Does that apply to the current Mobil 1? Or to the original formulation, back in the 1970s?

Mark, I suggest looking at the Cumulative Synthetic Oil Discussion sticky

https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-tech-garage-22/cumulative-synthetic-oil-discussion-52856/

to help fill out your search and further confuse you.

I'm not scientifically sure but empirically speaking tha majority of the failed engines i see here used mobil1 (pretty common and popular oil here). The bearings look great yet the housings, rotors and sideplates look "different" compared to what other oils make them look like.

I'm not a chemist so i can only stick to the factual experience i have.

I'm not a chemist either and have no factual experience. Just what I read here. Good to learn from someone who's actually been inside rotaries.

There are far more knowledgeable members and builders than the mad cow though.
At my age i'd rather be inside other things, too

Im sure things have changed by now, not to mention even mobil1 has different kind of weight and based stock. I will only use their 0w40 and 15w50 on my rotaries though. Its proven with oil test to hold ita visosity much better than the rest of mobil1

That's a good approach, what scares me is how well that particular oil mixes with fuel in the housing to provide proper lubrication.
Regional differences also play a role. We could be talking about 2 completely different oils!

Three old men sitting on a park bench. A beautiful girl walks by.

One old man says "I'd love to hug that!"

Second old man says "I'd love to hug that and kiss that."

Third old man says "I'd love to hug that and kiss that ... and what was that other thing we used to do?"
