LOTS of great advice here on how to get those darn things out. The cabin filter is quite easy to get to (seriously takes 90 seconds), just follow Laythor's advice.

I'd go for the wire hanger and duct tape technique. If possible have a friend spraying compressed air at the same time, maybe you can 'guide' them towards the tape.
The common sense route takes all the fun out!

Another thought

I am not sure exactly how bight e lights are, if they are LED/Super LED sized I rigged up a contraption to get a screw out of a vent in my brother's car that might work.

I have one of those mini-vacuums Sears sells, the "Big Shark", anyway I took the small vaccum head and duct tapped a spare piece of plastic tubing to the nozzle, so that I could drop it in the vent and suck up the little rascal. You have to be careful because the reduced air flow through the nozzle causes the vacuum to overheat quickly but if you can find or see the screw you can ****** it fast. I have also used this little home grown attachment for getting the odd bug out of a nook or cranny that you can't reach with a swatter.

Kinda off topic but the vacuum cleaner is also a spectacular way to get a bee or wasp out of your house other than running around destroying the place with a rolled up magazine. Just calmly put on the hose extension, get the vaccum ready to switch on and whammo! you can even pull their stupid, slow flying butts right out of the air when they think they have escaped you. I hate wasps with a passion and I just love vacuuming them up. A month or two later when you empty the bag and their dusty corpses roll out it's like a little late christmas present.

Well, the coins have been in my vents for a while and I can hear it once in a while... and when I do, I shake the steering wheel rapidly and the noise goes away. It just sorta bugs me knowing that I have coins in the defroster vents...

GEEZ!! I've been working 12 hr night shifts the last three nights. I wake up to see what's going on with this, and this thing has started to reach cult status! My favorite is the guy planning to use the vacuum cleaner to suck up the black widow! Hey, a whiff of Raid should be all it takes. It's what my wife used on my daughter's pet tarantulas in Oklahoma! It may offend the environmentalists out there, but those ladies are DEADLY! Personally, I prefer the Desert Eagle for black widows! Never take a knife to a gun fight!

My hopes of getting the defroster vents to pop out were dashed by the poster who said to start with removing the windshield. I'll live with it before I do that.

Where is the NW run on June 29? I have to entertain a teenage grand daughter, and I don't want to see you leches sniffing around! Remember my black widow disposal system!

Anyway, I'll try some, if not all of these suggestions. The ideas and comments have made me laugh, smile and make me realize, "It could have been worse!" Now, I have to get ready to go do one more twelve hour night shift! Thanks, you've been great!

i used this technique once when the mount clips of the turning signal housing on my bmw fell into the engine bay. use duck tape or something super sticky and it worked.

Haha I just managed to drop 3 separate ratchet bits down there while hard wiring my radar detector.

The only way that I can see to get them out is to cut a slit in the actual defrost plastic lining. Tried everything else I just cant get to them.

On the second or third day of my 4 consecutive 12 hour night shifts, I took a hard left turn, so, I live in the People's Republic of Washington, and I heard the bulbs roll off to the right. I hate to pronounce a cure, but I haven't heard the bulbs rolling or attling for four days now. I think I will leave well enough alone because I am sure I would REALLY screw something up if I went digging around in the dash.

Thanks again for all the ideas.
