I have noticed for like 4 days now that it's harder to turn the steering wheel. Maybe because I havent driven my 8 like I used to? I have been having this cold lately. I'm afraid that I will lose the power steering grrr happened to my friend.

 

Have you checked the power steering fluid?

The RX-8 doesn't use any power steering fluid; it has electric, not hydraulic power steering.

Hahaha, hey! We all make mistakes...Some of us just make more than others! (me) :p

 

it's probably just you being sick and haven't driven the 8 lately. Trust me, if your power steering goes, it'll actually be DIFFICULT to turn the wheels, especially from a stop, not just 'harder' :p

even if it is elec. pwr steering. it should still have fluid to cool off the motors. Mini's and MR2's both have elec. pwr steering and still use fluid.

 

If true the unit is still permanently sealed. I see no means to add any fluid to the system.

i'm not very familiar with our pwr steering sys. but let's just say it is a permanently sealed unit and you don't have to add fluid. the rack still uses fluid, and if the rack blows a seal and fills up inside the dust boots, then yes, she will feel a loss in power steering.

 

Well the rack does sit low in the car, it is possible road debris could have done some damage. She also has posted in the past about work being done to the A/C & Pulleys. Maybe a tech left a wrench in the car that worked it’s way down to the steering gear?

I realize I don't have a clue, but the car is lowered and I remember from a truck we lifted once that the steering angles all change. In the truck an adapter was included and we were still warned that "things" could wear prematurely. Could the lowering be a culprit?

you'd know if the PS went out, dont you remember trying to turn my wheel? It was a workout unless you were at highway speeds

 

i'm with Gomez... short sidewalls & wide profile make for difficult steering w/ low pressure...

 

Wouldn't TPMS light go on if pressure in tires was low?

 

her light is on anyway since she has 19's
