Cannot help but notice all the piccies I see of the steering wheel have buttons on them.
These appear to be for contolling the stereo and cruise control.

On the UK spec I have seen no mention of either feature (remote stereo control or cruise).

Can anyone confirm if this is standard spec or not ?

I believe they are the same buttons you'll find in a Mazda 6. I sat in one at my dealer and played with them. The buttons on the right hand side are the cruise control stuff- set,accel,resume,coast, etc. The ones on the left are for the stereo. They have two for + / - volume, a mute and 1 or 2 for presets. I think it was 1 for moving from preset 1 to 2 to 3, etc, and another for moving from bands - FM1, FM2, AM.

 

You will also have two additional buttons on the wheel for automatics to change gears. I noticed them while sitting in the car at the Detriot show.

Stereo controls on the wheel will be cool.

Would have thought that cruise would have been mentioned in the blurb if a standard feature... I expect the cruise buttons to be removed from the UK version.

 

If you go to mazdarx8.com, go to the gallery, and look towards the bottom on the right side of the small thumbnails, you'll see a pic of the RX-8 steering wheel. Clicking it brings up a larger image. Then on the top right of the pic is a 'enlarge pic' link - clicking that brings up a full screen view of the picture. You can clearly see all of the buttons - on/off for the cruise, cancel for the cruise; on the left - 'mode' - is to change from am to fm1 to fm2. The two arrows above that - ^ and down arrow - are for the move the radio station presets up and down. The auto will have shifter paddles probably around the perimeter of the wheel - unless they are over / under one of the wheel spokes - anyone can confirm that has seen an auto? I'd attach the pic but it's 30K too large!
