Starter Differences

Hello,

In the midst of rebuilding my 8 and was considering getting a new starter because, why not? However there are tons of different kinds that all say they are "upgraded" from the OEM S1 starter.

Amazon Upgraded Starter Amazon Upgraded Starter

or
Mazdatrix Starter

Now I'm assuming the main difference between these two is that the Mazdatrix starter is new, and not a remanufactured unit. Would that be correct? $400 is a bit steep if this part is only marginally better than the $200 one.

To anyone who knows/has upgraded, $400 vs $200, which would you buy?

The part number is what's important. The one on Amazon is N3R3 which is the latest, upgraded one.

I'm not sure how much stock I can put in part numbers on Amazon. Would not surprise me in the slightest for it to be fake.

well here’s the MSRP and Wholesale pricing from Mazda on a new S2 manual starter, which pretty much clarifies the situation:

I would recommend an S2 starter.

Then it's as I suspected, Amazon is full of **** or is selling only refurbs.

Thanks

not so sure, if it mimics the S2 with larger extra tooth gear and motor it might be ok. Except with the OE part you know it meets certain standards. One issue with Amazon etc. is you often have no way to know the source or judge what the quality is without purchasing it and finding out. I just bought a MAP sensor made in the USA for $100 shipped. Is a $11 - $20 from China just as good? I don’t really care, because it’s just not worth it to me given the consequences of it not outputting the correct signal at a critical moment. I suppose some people might not think the same for a starter, but then that one time your engine floods and won’t start afterward …

Frankly I’m of the mindset in my life now that I’m ok paying 2x or higher just for it NOT being made in Wuhoofluville. I don’t even care how good the cheaper one from there is. It’s the principle of not supporting and assisting an entity that is directly opposed to the God given right of freedom and democracy and otherwise does not at all have the good interests of this nation in their heart, but would rather weaken, overcome, and enslave us all. We have enough of that going on within our own here as it is.

I agree 100%, I support American jobs where I can. But, it was American corporations that sold out, I know with globalization it was inevitable, but they were all too willing to ship manufacturing overseas.

And I'm surprised there's not more rage against China than there is, so many deaths, so much lost productivity, and so many people putting their lives on hold...because of China.
