Exclamation So who burned up their RX-8 near LA?

http://www.mazda3forums.com/index.php?topic=132272.0

I love the commentary in there. It might be a Mazda community but they don't know squat about rotaries. The 'flooded cat' possibility is almost as good as the guy noting that his pops blew an engine doing 15k RPMs in a 7. Classic comedy.

Only time I've read anything like this happening was in regards to Rotary Rasp's issue where his dealership didn't attach the fuel hose properly when they swapped out his engine. No idea if the guy who's car this was had any work done.

Those are some damn nice wheels on the car so I can't imagine he hasn't found this place.

i died laughing at this comment "Its called engine fire rotarys are known for this. My dad almost died when the 13b of us rx7 blew up and the flywheel came out doing about 15000 rpms "

sounds like to me , his dad was driving a F1 car.

I woulda bet drag racing. I know I've seen a couple spectacular rotary engine blow ups on youtube but they're almost always the 3-rotor applications with crazy engine tunes. Considering our rotary is rated for a higher RPM then the earlier 13bs and it's only rated close to 13k RPMs someone doing 15k RPMs in a 7 is nutso. In a fun way.

But those aren't fires or 'explosions'. You just see a bunch of random crap like flywheels go flying out and there's a little puff of smoke.

yeah people talk a lot of crap about rotaries yet I have seen/heard of cases of regular cars that burst into flames, parked and turned off like a case of a VW R32 I read about.

Doesn't look like an engine fire to me at all....... it looks like it was started somewhere near the middle of the car. From the looks of the engine cover (being that it's still there) I highly doubt this was an engine fire.

Good point. My first bet is that he's a smoker and lit the rear on fire with a misthrown butt. 'Spontaneous Rotary Combustion™' probably works with insurance adjusters.

I bet he started it on purpose... 1. the kid said he was able to get everything outa the car b4 it spread. 2. he states that his dad had taken it to the dealer many times for problems that werent getting fixed. that guy got tired of it was upsidedown like all of us on the car so he torched it so he could get a lancer. case closed!

Either it's arson or another engine replacement by Galpin Mazda. I think thats the shop rotaryrasp went to. I hear that the whole fire thing is a special service they offer free of charge.

No engine fire = interesting.....

I can't imagine how the middle of the car just caught on fire. I've never seen a clogged cat explode in a ball of fire.

and if it did the fire would come out of the exhaust(shrouds would be melted)......looks like the inside of the car was lit on fire and that traveld to the engine bay from the floor board melting the engine cover a little...... looks fishy

i have an education in fire inspection/investigation. from what i can see in the pics all signs point towards an interior point of origin.

disclaimer is that there is MUCH that could be hidden and not seen clearly in the pics, just wanted to confirm you guys are correct in your suspicions from everything you can tell in pics

there are also some points in the story which i dont buy for a second.
-no respectable half educated fire dept is going to show up to a vehicle fire looking like that and use water. foam will come right away.

-the owner opening the hood and seeing fire... doesnt add up, the only visible damage under the hood is exposure and radiant heat damage due to the intensity of fire coming through the windshield, direction of wind, and the fact that the hood was open. I'd bet that if the hood werent open the engine covers wouldnt even be discolored.

-a gasoline fed fire of that intensity will very very quickly shatter all the glass, i can see one place where glass appears to have been busted out by the FD and not heat

-the first picture shows absolutely no signs of fire beneath the floor pans
