So, how many years before the 8 becomes a collector car?

Just wondering, and thinking of a few quotes...

"Buy land, they aren't making it any more"

"Quick ladies, get your tiger-skin coat before they go extinct"

Given all the pessimistic threads about the upcoming demise of the 8, I'm tempted to take an optimistic view of this, in that we will now own a VERY rare car that they aren't making any more of. So, how many years should I keep my 8 before offering it on eBay as a "rare example of classic post-millenium Japanese engineering"? I'm thinking about 2015 sounds right (assuming gas is not $20 a gallon by then)

Once they stop making them and people wreck most of the ones that are left over.

Depends on how many Mazda builds and how many go to that great graveyard in the sky during the production period. Some cars when they get old appreciate in value, due to a unique characteristic of the design. Like the Hemi Cuda. Was not a lot of them built in the day,now the are selling for a million dollars on Barrett/Jackson Auctions. That is a 30 year old car.
I think the RX-8 is a unique automobile due to its Rotary engine and styling. But is it a car that will bring the collectors to pay large amounts of money for in ,say 20/30 years?
I think what makes a car valuabe to a collector is unique design ,,number produced,,
and number of cars still on the road, say in 10 to 20 years. Some cars do become instant collectables, But they are limited in production (100/500) and usually cost over $250,000.
Time will tell and the time is going to be (I feel) in about 20 years.
So lets all see how many RX-8's are around in 20 years.
If you want to hang on to this car that long then I think it will be a collectors car due to the age of the car. The Rotary Engine will help also.

It's amazing to me how much this site attempts to predict the demise of this car.

As for it being a colloctor's car...who knows, but viewing any new car as an investment is unwise at best.

1000, there are way too many out there. Maybe by the time we really have flying cars these will be collectibles.

Well, it's collectible to me and I don't really care if it is considered one otherwise. I intend to keep Bella!

I agree, going and buying a car with even the slightest "hope" that it will be collectible is stupid. (unless you are a millionaire and can afford **** like that)

I bought it because I had the money and because I was tired of my 4 cylinder econobox saturn, I love modding it and learning about it, but what the future holds I do not know. In 5 years when I have more money (assuming) I Might tire of this car and find something else, who knows.

it may not become a collectible, but it should become a 'cult car' once production ends (whenever that may be)

all rotary cars end up in some sort of cult car status, eventually

I did have the opp to buy the new Shelby Mustang this week, at manufacturing cost no less. But 500hp is no match for a 90degree turn. Plus insurance would have been around 300$ a month with a small down payment of one arm or leg.

I thought they started out with cult status. That was part of the appeal of buying my 8 - something cool that not everyone else has.

As well as being able to sneer at my friends and say "You mean you've still got a car with pistons?"

Ken

It all depends on what you think a 'collectors car' means. To me a 'collectors car' sells for no less than $100K at auction no less then twenty years after being new. The shear volume of RX8's produced lead me to believe that a large % of current RX8's in the market would have to be wiped out for this car to be worth anything down the road. If you look at the cars that fetch big $$$ at auction you'll see that they were built in limited #'s with even fewer surviving the test of time. 25,000 units in 2004 alone does not make a limited production car......had Mazda built 250 Mazdaspeed 8's with significantly more powerful engines, then those might be 'collectors cars'.

The RX8 is already a collector's car.

See here

To be more serious, how many RX7 models are collector's cars? The RX8 has lots more revisions to go, and is currently at zero major revisons. This can only mean one thing: I need to spend more time in the RX8 and less time on the forum thinking about crap like this.

Bashco... As long as people want to own this car and keep it, it is a collectable. The rarity determines the price though.

Example, I love my new razr phone and will keep it for ever. I have just now collected one razr phone, but it wont go up in price. I also have 1 mazda rx8 and want to keep it... thus i have collected 1 mazda rx8... and If i put in ad in the paper selling this car for 120k, then its value becomes much higher then what I payed for it.

i still have the Nokia 8260 cell phone (the 'original' mini-phone) circa 2000, would it increase in value as a collectible if i just keep it a little bit longer? lol

I agree with you....that is why I put 'collectors car' in quotes.......it might mean something different to everyone. In fact, they're 'collector clubs' for just about everything ever made.....including your Razor cell phone. The term 'collector' has so many loose interpretations that it's almost useless.

If Mazda starts to paint all their Rx-8's Silver it could quicken up the "Rarity" status of our 8's. But most say a collectors car is anything over 20 years old and has some sort of "value". Will the 8 eventually reach that status yes it will solely because of the Rotary, but will it command big ole bucks that will put it in the top 5 of barret jackson auction I doubt it. That and I think the only ones that may "command" if you will decent $$$ years (and I do mean years here!!) down the line are the Shinka's because of the rare colors used for them. Well in over 30 years we will know I guess right?
