Although I'm a believer in dedicated snow or at least all-season tires for winter driving, since they remain softer in cold weather, summer tires are still rubber and will still provide traction.

I take periodic back road jaunts on snow/sand/salt free weekend days and nary a problem. Of course I can get them to break free much more easily at colder temps. But then we're rarely in single digit F cold in SE Mass.

Of course heed Dirty Harry's credo - "a man's got to know his limitations."

Glad you made it home - when are you off to SD?

I thought it was sooner so you might make it on summer tires. But it's 3 months away through the heart of winter. Dicey proposition if the 8 is your only car.

You're crazy to drive with summer tires in the winter. It's only a matter of time before you crash, and it's going to cost you way more to clean up the damage and buy winter or all seasons than to just buy the tires.

This sounds like terrible planning....first driving around with the summers tires, then going to a local store and buying winters and junking your half-used summers....and still not having a decent second set of rims. Sorry but come on, think about this a little beforehand...

He ended up making it home on his summer tires. Have no idea what he's on now. Considering the weather everyone is getting back East, I'm sure he's not going anywhere on summer tires.

I did make it home. The next day the roads were entirely clear. I spent the next week at home not going anywhere until it finally cleared up. Now I'm mobile again, until the next snowstorm at least.

The snow/sand/salt receded enough yesterday for me to get in a ride. Thanks to the Battery Tender, and BHR Ignition, it fired right up after a six week+ sit. I'm back in love with my '8!

btw: summer tires, but above freezing temps so no isues. But then I don't push it on my winter drives.
