You know, I've only seen snow once in my life as a kid. Now that I own an RX-8... I don't want to see it so much now.

I disagree. The 8 does fine in the snow. It is well balanced, and with decent snow tires and a restrained throttle you won't be lacking in grip nor control.

Did you ever buy those blizzaks you were looking at last month? If not, get a decent set of winters and take that sand out of your trunk.

Drive safe

The post that did it to me was the winter of 2003-04 when a guy got stuck in the drive thru lane of McDonalds. The stock tires really are summer only. It isn't the tread. It's the compound. I'd park it if I were you.

RX-8 is fine in snow…

From edmunds long-term test:

"Those who have to deal with slippery driving conditions will benefit from the RX-8's perfect 50/50 weight balance and available traction/stability control system. Throw a set of Bridgestone Blizzaks on this baby and you should be able to handle most anything winter throws your way."

Stock tires are summer tires.

Read up on tire rack.
There is a big differance in tires.

If you get stuck in an icy parking spot, which of those components to you spread in front of the tires to get traction?

I also in the snow belt from this storm (NW Ohio) and drove home from work today before it got too adverse. Maybe 2 inches on the ground...and lets just say my car is parked until the snows removed. It was almost embarrasing.

I have no doubt that the 8 is a great car with snow tires, but with the summer performance that comes on 'em stock, I wouldn't think sand would do much more than create more mass to stop when sliding along.

I can't wait for summer

I prefer to walk, even in snow.

but I prefer to drive, especially when its freaking hot/cold

So I choose to drive, and my RE960AS pole position still works fine. a bit slippy of course, since its under 45 degress but ahh I got home in 1 whole piece.

Drove to work this morning with 2 inches on the ground so far, and the roads had not been treated at all. I drove on packed powder the whole way. With Dunlop Wintersport M3 tires, this car is awesome in the snow. It can be a little tough to get moving on an incline, but I haven't been stuck yet (knock on wood) and the cars manners are great at speed.

There should be a foot of snow by the time I head for home later. I'll update.

2 inches of snow and ice in Arlington, VA, and my 8 was a joy with some Pirelli winter sports. I even was able to get thru entrances, that had been 'blocked' by street plows, where the snow was up to 5 inches.

I was more concerned about my underpaneling than traction, as I got thru it easily. Luckily ice had softened a bit so no big deal.

Don't worry about the clearance too much. It sits higher than other sports cars. There is about 4-6 inches on the roads here, and I haven't had a problem with clearance yet. I have Bridgestone LM22s that are nearing the end of their lives at this point, and the car handles well with them. It's just the stock summer tires that make the car difficult to drive in the snow. With snows, it handles better than most cars out there.
