Skis in RX-8
Guten Tag!
Does anybody know (or have a well based opinion) whether two pairs of skis will fit in the trunk of the RX-8 ? I checked all the pictures I could find, and it looks to me like the (what is it called) connecting hole between trunk and cabin might be too small. No, putting the skis on a rack on the roof or other solutions like that are not an option as our "large car usage pattern" (two Miatas in the family) does include frequent +700 km trips to and from the Alps, and that can only be done in reasonable time after a full day of work or skiing when speeds that are not really compatible with skiing racks are done for prolonged periods. Therefore, the skis have to be in the car.

This has also been my concern as I live in Colorado and go skiing quite a bit. I also don't like ski racks on the top of my car, and I have been fortunate to have a car with 60/40 split folding rear seats (which I think are an option on the 8) which I plan to get. I'm sure with this option, and even the pass through, if you do it right, you'll be able to fit 2 sets of 200cm skis into the car. But this also one of the many reasons that I'm holding off on buying one. Prolly wait for the 2005 or 2006 model if it fits all of my needs.

You definitely will not be able to fit the skis entirely in the trunk. Also, the rear seats do not fold down. The pass through should be adequate but you'll have to play with the angle of your skis so you can still shift....

Hmmm, I couldn't remember where I have seen that picture with the "Hole between the two rear seats" folds down and opens but I was pretty sure you can get at least most of the front part of your skiis through that hole and into the passager compartment.
( For sure the bindings are not gona make it through, at least not both at a time).
If any of you remember that picture that I was talking about please post it on here please. Thanks.

I believe Mazda Japan sells a custom ski case that fits in the rear seat pass-through, so even without the this accessory, it should still fit. I posted an image of it here:

Though I do like that dual board/wing combo idea:D

Length and interference with shifting will probably not be that critcal as current skis are usually rather short (we use 1.6 and 1.7 m at the moment, down from 2.02 m for me).
Thanks for all the replies!

Looks promising indeed. After checking out the size of the pass through door in the picture, I think I might be able to fit at least my skiis and my current ski bag through the opening.
Good ! one less concern for me.
