Should I pre order?
This is my very first post. I was surfing today for info on the Rx and found you guys.
I'm glad I signed up I just recently lost my 01 integra in an accident and decided that the Rx-8 is definitely the replacement.
Now I've been reading and it seems like everyone is pre-ordering theirs but I read somewhere that June July and the end of the year is the best times to buy a car, also by the summer I'll have a huge down payment saved up. But from what I'm reading If I wait I might not get one.
Any suggestions.

Pre-ordering is fine, but before you do shop around all the Mazda dealers on who will give you a better price(why am I telling you this, you should know this already). Then just put a deposit down. Don't forget to ask if you can get your deposit back if you change your mind about getting the 8.

dying_here,
I don't know for sure when your (what if)order comes out. My guess is probably around Christmas. Have you checked the Mazda website. If no one answers just ask your local Mazda dealer salesman (or should I say dumb dookies). I'm sure the dealer will know enough of whats going on ,pertaining to the 8, by then.

I believe the dealers will have 'other' RX-8s available June onwards as well as pre-orders, only they will be to the dealer's spec not yours (e.g. all silver or black) and may sell out pretty quickly. Also they may be higher than MSRP if demand is high enough.

I believe the 3rd and last batch of the year will be in July. That is when my car will be in. I wanted to stretch it out until late July/Aug so I could put 45% of the total on the down. If you are planning to preorder you have 8 (heh) days left from today. So you better start looking soon if you are serious about it. Hope this helps! :D

from my limited knowledge, i think with the pre-order cars rolling in, there will be addition rx-8s for the general public on the lots as well.. how many?? what colors??? mark ups?? who knows... but march is the last pre-order month for the fall time frame... after that, you need to deal with the cars at the dealers... i guess you can go to the dealers whenever and order a car and just wait for it, who knows... i am ordering mine tomorrow at heritage... titanium color, but now i am leaning toward sunlight silver... i have 10 hours to make a decisions, as after that, there is a HUGE party at my house for Roy JOnes fight!!!!

If not preordering...??
If i do not pre-order when is the soonest time that i can order then pickup the RX8? Seems like the way to get a RX8 in this year 2003 is to preorder it....
I wonder what is the production # would be per month for the US...I assume that the production # will be higher then the # that are on preorder so there might be a possibility to buy it off the lot??

I think all of the cars to be delivered in 2003 are pre-orders (3 allotment periods Jan-Feb-Mar. Granted many dealers have submitted "pre-orders" for themselves to sell -- so there will definitely be cars available. For example my dealer has two cars available in the first allotment that they pre-ordered so that they will get their full allocation.

Ok here I go to add to the confusion. I ordered last saturday and asked them when was the last preorder delivery. They told me NOV/DEC. They took my order and wrote in the contract MSRP, Refundable deposit, and delivery in NOV/DEC. It is going to be a painful wait but I need to give a big down payment.

From what my dealer told me. The last allocation for preorders should be in Nov/Dec. I think most dealers will begin to recievce Non-preordered cars around Aug. That is what they told me. Just keep in mind that if you wait, and the RX-8 gets really really popular the dealers will mark it up big time.

Great.... if most dealers will recievce Non-preordered cars around Aug...coz i was planning to order one around that time...hopes it will come true....hope they won't jack up the price too much...do u guys know how many % do the dealers make off when they sell u the pre-ordered RX8? and whats possible mark up price? is it really depends on demand?

I am pretty sure that the 12,000 US cars scheduled for delivery this year are all pre-order sales. My small dealer here in Omaha has 12 cars in the pre-order allotment -- if you project that over all the dealers in the US it is pretty easy to get to the 12,000 cars. That said -- I am sure that there will be cars on the lot. My dealer for instance has only really sold half of his pre-order vehicles so the other half will be sold from the "lot" but I would guess will be subject to mark-up's if the vehicle is as popular as projected -- the old supply and demand -- little supply and big initial demand.:D

what dealers say vs reality
Let's start there. Anyone who has visited many dealers and discussed anything specific about the cars they are selling should know that somewhere close to 50% (+/-) of the time they have BS coming out their mouths. That is because they either 1) don't know and don't want to sound like it 2) they weren't paying attention and really believe they know the answer 3) sometimes they just got wrong information 4) they are correct (the other 50% +/-).
That said, take anything one dealer says with a grain of salt and pass it by logic and this forum and if all else fails concerning the RX-8, email rx8orders. The official word back in January was that the 3rd batch of preorders, set for early March, would be delivered August - October. Anyone saying Nov/Dec is just again - not paying attention or guessing or trying to answer what they think you might want to hear. From experience, those guesses are usually wrong. And my personal experience is that they are usually more like 75% errant.
For my own RX-8, I've made as sure as possible that the dealer does this preorder correctly and have just been patient to wait for this entire process to work out it's bugs and to get my car.
My dealer has 9 in their preorder allocation, 3 per preorder date (Jan, Feb, Mar). I believe they have not sold all of those. That implies that some people who have yet never even heard of the RX-8 can walk into a dealer (probably several hundred dealers) sometime this summer and purchase an RX-8 that may or may not match their 'ideal' option choices and drive it home before some of us who preordered. I believe though that the majority of those who buy an RX-8 in the US up until about October will be those who preordered. Once it starts showing up in showrooms and on the street they are likely to sell much faster. Most of us preordering have been following the development of this car from the RX-01 in 1995 or at least as the RX-8 the past two years (I believe anyway) and want to get one ASAP so were quite pleased with this new pre-order program that Mazda has put together. Heretofore (the New Beetle was a good example) they just built a new car, shipped to the dealers, and even those on buying lists could either take what came in or wait a little longer (I waited 6 months to buy my black TDI in 1999 that was my least fave color of black of the 8 colors avail). All-in-all, this is a very neat and cutting edge program we have available. Those who don't want to preorder will have to live with what is left from the early surge of buyers. My .02 + (it's Saturday).
