Should I buy a RX-8...WHY

Hey every one this is my first time on this forum. Yes I am new to the RX-8 but not to Rotaries. I spent a lot of time on the rotary forums back when I had my 88 turbo2. I should my rx-7 two years ago and have missed it ever since. A year ago I was looking for a new car and ended up with 04 Golf a big mistake. The car runs great and gets good MPG but it’s just a boring car to drive . Soon after I got the car I joined the service and was able to improve my financial position a great deal. Now I have a chance to upgrade to a better platform and get back into rotaries. I guess my question is what you all that owned RX8s think of them. And are you happy with them. Also is it better to go with a touring model over a base model. I will only own a six speed and don’t plan on doing that much to the car maybe a racing beat intake and exhaust down the road but that would be about it. Any info or input is welcome. Thank you for your time.

Ok if I understand Wright the touring model over the base model comes standard with the 18 inch alloys. A better suspension. A Better LSD and a stability control with traction control. Does this sound accurate?

I should add I do plan on the car seeing annual auto crosses on the weekends. I loved taking the turbo 2 down to the Blue Ridge District auto crosses in Salem and Bluefield and I must say it gave me something to look forward to every few weeks... I like this forum. Every one seams friendly and helpful. It’s a fresh breath compared to the DSM forums and Probe talk forums that I am used too.

I kept my '04 up to now because it's fun to drive. Go for the models that have the 18 inch wheels and sport suspension, its worth the extra money.

Never had a problem with this car, and never had it flooded. It's a car that if you take reasonable care, it always keeps you driving happy.

First, welcome to the forum!
Second, get the '8. You'll love it like most of us do.
Third, start modifying to make it feel the way you want it to. The car is great but part of the relationship is modifications.
Fourth, contribute to the forum with stories, DIYs etc.
Fifth, attend owner meets. You get an entire community with the purchase of the RX8.

Actually the base model 6 spd manual comes with 18 inch alloys and LSD. The touring model adds dynamic stability control (DSC) and Traction control as well as a sunroof, homelink, and 300 watt bose audio system.

6 speed manuals come with the sport suspension.

Ok I made it to page 3 and had to say I believe it . Now is there any one out there that has any complaints about the car or any thing other than the normal rotary problems. From what I have read it’s exactly what I have been looking for. As I said I loved my turbo 2 buts with the age of the car and the normal problems with a aged 13bt it’s just not practical any more and what can I say my golf doesn’t exactly get my heart racing. Hers another question where is a good place to pick up a used 8 on the east coast. My price range caps off at about 22K but that’s the highest I can go and I would like to find a 04 or 05 and would prefer a touring model. Once again thanks for the warm welcome it’s a breath of fresh air to the normal DSM and Probe forums .

What's up man? I am from GA as well. You can get a great used 8 for 22k. I would just go to AutoTrader.com and do a search. There are plently of used 8's for sale up in the metro ATL area that would be a nice buy. Just look around, there are plenty.

Actually im not from GA. Im just down here for a few weeks for Air Borne School at Fort Benning. I just finished my training on Friday and make my jumps this week. After that I am moving up to fort Brag NC with the 82nd air borne . I am From Bent tm VA a back woods area close to the star city Roanoke. The word mountain is literal and we have plenty of two and three lane back roads that run for ever in the area with the nearest shopping mall being over an hour away. We also enjoy the Blue Ridge Mountains and the massive Blue Ridge Park way.

The Base 6MT is the lightest model. Sport adds DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) and Xenon load-leveling headlamps. Touring, as noted, adds tons of other **** which sometimes is, and is not, desirable. Grand Touring is the mac-daddy pimpin' mobile. A "Shinka" is for people who think "Grand Touring" has too many syllables and doesn't cost enough. Shink adds more sound deadening to the subframes and interior.

My 2006 Velocity Red Base 6MT rocks, and tips the scales at 2950 lbs with 1/2 tank of gas and my camera gear on board.

Be aware: These are NOT fuel efficient cars. 20 mpg is a realistic number for an 06. Cardenale Way Mazda in Phoenix, AZ offered me a Whitewater Pearl Mica Grand Touring 2006 model with 7000 miles for $22k this week. Shame I bought my car last August! Either way, the lightest weight car rules!

Best of luck to you in the 82nd! That's a tough group of hombres! Congrats on making the cut.

Just test drive one and see if it's for you. You could read all you want about it but in the end you can only know by driving one. I read about the RX8 for probably about a year and I was unsure about it until I got myself in the driver's seat! I am completely satisfied with mine so far (2007 model).

If you are getting the stick-shift, all of those things are standard on the Base sport model (except for stability/traction control, which you need to select the performance package for, also includes fog lights and HID head lights). I had just a sport model with the performance package (6M) and thought it offered all of the equipment you really need with a price well under 30k.
