you should try anyway, doesn't hurt to ask... I guess it would really depend on the dealership.

I don't grab my stick at the head... I kinda wrap my hand around the shaft and go at it that way, so the head doesn't get abused.

Waiting for the inevitable replies... :D

I've had to replace EVERY shifter I have ever bought every year or so....from MOMO to the cheapies, I guess I don't have the midas touch...but it is neat to see how every shifter makes the car drive differently. Go ahead.... Pick up a new one to fit your style, but be prepared for the leather to fall off or the glue to fail or vibration to loosen all your fixins.

EDIT: I guess the car doesn't drive any different, it just FEELS different.

actually a correct shifting technique is to be light with the shifter and not to grab it like a "joystick" :D You're suppose to juse push and pull it from the "head" ..... oh gawd this is bad.

Mine isn't warn out but I would hope they would replace it, I had my shift **** replaced in my hyundai after 3 years it started to crack.

lol weird.. take it to have a look at it, it doesn't seem normal at all..
It reminds me of my sister's sunfire, after 130k miles and so , it does that even when in gear, say 3rd, it moves about 1.5 inches side to side.. lol but seriously have it looked at..

really? what did you say at the dealer? did you pay for those?

the part that is worne out is the lower left silver part.. i tend to "push" the shifter when changin wears from 2nd to 3rd and 4th to 5th... ( for some reason i don't seem to be able to do it from 6th to 7th:D )

I have a little worn spot on the plating as well. It started showing after a couple hundred miles. It's gotten just a little bit bigger now that I have a couple thousand miles. I'd say it's a plating problem.

I would be very surprised if the warranty doesn't cover replacement as often as needed during the warranty period if the wear is significant. Someone will have to try it and let us know.

Or you can just take a ziplock sandwich bag and place it over the shifter.. secure it with a heavy duty rubberband and you'll be all set.

I'll keep an eye out for this also. I think Mazda should replace it with one that is CNC machined out of a solid block of titanium.

Yes, that's it, machined titanium! (well, that would be nice, wouldn't it?)

Miataphiles lurking here may know what I mean by this..

Perhaps it is time for some voodoo.

I wonder, if enough demand arises, would Voodoo Bob make a **** for this car?

This is where automatic transmission are alot better. You dont shift as often on the stick, but you use paddles. You guys dont have paddles with 6 MT.
