Post Turbo.....

One word sums it up - turbo.

The reliability problems of the RX-7 were predominantly turbo-related. The FD series '7 had twin turbos, mostly controlled thru thin rubber vacuum hoses, diaphragms and relays, that often failed, sometimes taking the motor with them.

The RX-8 is normally aspirated, and NA rotaries can live a long, long time. First generation NA RX-7s from the late "seventies" are still around, going strong.

I 've found that those who are quick to hate are:
1) jealous
2) ignorant of the whole rotary concept in general.

I have two of these where I work. Always making cracks and comments about the rx8. After I let them drive it those comments stopped.

I've heard that they are good for over 200k. I think the history for NA rotaries will prove me more likely to be right, if they are maintained properly.

The rx7 was a legend in most cases.

Twin turbo engines are so notorious for short engine life that most aftermarket extended warranty companies won't sell you the warranty, no matter who made the car.

While it is true that the 3rd gens were notorious for reliability, they were designed as race cars. It was the only car of it's time to take the Viper in the slolem and it was nick named the NSX killer. It is considered in Japan to be the finest sports car ever made in the world.

It's reliability actually did not kill the sales. It took an entire factory to produce only 2000 vehicles a month. Each one was hand tuned for racing. The problem was, according to Mazda, that they could produce 150k Mazda Protege's in the same factory. Then, the mid 90's recession hit, home prices fell and people stopped buying expensive cars. The Supra, 300 and RX-7 all disappeared as well as many Luxury lines.

RX8 of course! I test drove both numerous times when I was new car shopping. The 8 was much more fun to drive, better handling overall.

There is like a 8+ page on this subject. Also, you are on an RX8 board, which do you think they would prefer? It is all a matter of preference.

I drove both when I was looking. The 350z was a little faster, but wasn't nearly as much fun to drive. It feels like driving a brick while the rx8 feels nimble and responsive. The 8 is just so unique in many ways. Rotary engine, suicide doors, electrically assisted steering, looks, and just the way it feels.

Over 8000 miles on my 2005 and zero problems with the Renesis. I follow the drivers guide and owners manual religously. Mazda's guidence seems to work well.

What would I do with a 350z? It doesn't have a back seat.

My '89 RX-7 GXL was good for 240k with little or no maintenance before compression was lost (then I drove it for a few weeks with what felt like 20 hp before it wouldn't start anymore). I'm sure the Renisis rotary will improve upon that cars engine reliablity.
