just like Shinga i have driven sticks a long time. since 1957. they replaced the fifth and sixth gear syncros. it was the car not the driver.

LPCOKIE 09-30-2009 04:43 PM

sorry i forgot. i get about 19 miles per gal. in the 05 i got about 20.

ASH8 09-30-2009 10:49 PM

Must be a batch of defective Synchronizer Rings, as the 'known" issue for 09's was the 6 th gear itself, which was replaced with a Carbon Coated one, the Sync Ring had no burs on it in those boxes, but as normal Mazda usually instructs the Dealer to replace both the gear and ring which are obviously separate...

Your barbed ring is another issue again it appears?

Hope it is all well now.

19mpg is what I am getting as well premix or no premix and driving performance doesn't seem to have much effect either 0.5 mpg one way or other all around 19. Maybe this will change with time but I have seen that 19 number quit consist from other posted series II mpg# around here.

9krpmrx8 09-30-2009 11:45 PM

So mileage has not changed,

I sit at a steady 22 when I drive pure highway...but my in town mileage sucks like everybody else's. But, why would I buy a sports car and bitch about mpg? I knew what I was getting into in the first place.

LPCOKIE 10-01-2009 07:02 PM

i got 21 to 20 in my 05. but the 09 gets 19 to 18. i do see a difference but not huge.

RX8pwnage 10-03-2009 07:41 AM

12-14, all city and I drive it like I stole it

Bump.

TZ250 10-10-2009 12:08 AM

6 weeks old, 2000 miles on original oil, one quart burned, no other issues

Oh. and one other thing. Dip stick oil reading is generally lower on warm engine than dead cold engine. So I top off cold right to the full line. When I check it warm, it's about half way between full and first fill mark. Never reads overfull, hot or cold. Opinions?

time to take out the 12 gauge saw-off....:smoker:

BigBenb84 10-23-2009 12:06 AM

Bought my R3 3 weeks ago.
700~miles, 3 fill-ups so far:
18.3
19.0
18.0
Still breaking it in so no high revs, and I go thru drive-throughs, sit at ridiculously long traffic lights, and sit in the driveway for about a minute till the first variable redline LED goes out.

Oil level on dip stick hasn't fallen enough to warrant adding. I will change at 3000 but don't know what weight I should use, this forum has too much opinion on it all its hard to decide....same goes for premixing...I'm not doing it for now.

Anyone else have a rough time going into 2nd when cold. It's really hard to do it smoothly...when cold. I really hope this tranny breaks in and smooths out like was posted by ASH.

5w20 if you feel unadventurous, though most use 5w30 in FL due to the heat. You should premix. Makes a tremendous difference when you compare the engine block of an engine that saw premix it's entire lifetime, and one that didn't. There's large grooves in the block.

Yea.. when it's really cold I can't go into 1st or 2nd either, let it warm up a bit, or skip the gear.

Just breached 20k miles this weekend, woot.

EMart11b 10-23-2009 12:56 AM

Gah what is with you people and not changing your oil?! I changed mine every 500 for the first 3k. Changing the oil is more important than granny shifting when breaking an engine in :wallbash:

kster 10-23-2009 09:31 AM

Yeah, I'm at ~900 miles now and will do an oil change shortly (probably with 5w30).

Oil weight is debatable but I think your safe with a 30W. Premixing on the 09+ may not be necessary with the third oil injector but it can't hurt. Personally if i get an 09' I would still get the SOHN adapter (if it fits? with the new OMP system) so that you have fresh, clean premix instead of used engine oil that is not designed to burn.

plain ole wanker 01-10-2010 08:36 PM

In the cold under 32F getting 17mpg
oh a whopping 5200 miles

kster 01-10-2010 09:40 PM

My update:

@1000 miles: changed diff fluid, tranny fluid, motor oil, brake pads, brake fluid, brake lines
@2950 miles: oil change

I'm at ~3000 miles now. Zero problems so far.

As far as the transmission, it's a little notchy going into third when cold but fine otherwise.

SOHN Adapters can not and will not fit S2 engines, the front timing cover is different and does not have access there..
