Out of the 3 Mazda's I've had, I can say for certain that it was the only one that felt like it was put together with love. It's a hard thing to explain, but I do miss the total confidence that it instills when driving. I can tell every facet of the car was thought out. The 6 and the 3 just felt "thrown together." I won't miss them at all. The RX8 I do still miss.

If... and I mean IF I ever get financially able to have a 2nd car for a toy/project, I'd love to snag a 40AE. Maybe one day.

I absolutely agree. The 8 was not a hack job on some other platform, it was new from the ground up. With amazingly few exceptions (sunvisors!!), every piece I work on has the touch of someone doing the best job he could on it. I bet every engineer at Mazda wanted a piece of this action. When a non-gearhead wonder wtf I'm talking about, I open the trunk and point to the hinge mechanism which is a minor work of art and a great example of functional, clever engineering.

I always thought it kinda neat that there really is no performance aftermarket for the car, nor did it change much over it's entire lifespan. To me, that means Mazda already designed it about as perfect as it could be
