Sensitive subject, the true HP rating of a stock RX-8

I know the car is rated for 232HP and 159FT-LB torque. Who on here thinks the number might be on the high side? I personally think the number is overflated slightly, I think the number is probably around 210-220HP stock.

This is not about if the car is good or not, it is simply an opinion on the car's reported figures. Think of it like Tom Cruise saying he is 5'11.

Jedi54 09-23-2009 11:03 AM

tmak: are we talking at the flywheel or to the wheels?
I believe the 232 figure is about accurate.

I've done 203 whp :)

dozer 09-23-2009 11:05 AM

ive done 243 :) stock

tmak26b 09-23-2009 11:05 AM

Flywheel. If you do over 200whp on a dynojet stock, then you are definitely at 230HP. I think the rough figure is 15-18% drivetrain loss on a RWD car.

adamwzl 09-23-2009 11:07 AM

^ Dozer lies!

BUT, have you done 203 whp stock?

TheWulf 09-23-2009 11:39 AM

^ he never said stock ;)

unless the dyno was really off calibration i'd be skeptical of anything stock that high.

adamwzl 09-23-2009 11:40 AM

I dont think Jedi remembers what stock was....

renesisgenesis 09-23-2009 12:24 PM

I think the stock rx8 makes right about 220-225 flywheel. People bash on the 8 a lot for being slow, but when you get right down to it, the 8 has a list of specs which put it on the list of elite road cars of all time.

-RWD
-over 200 bhp. (ok so not a lot of power but certainly enough to be sporting)
-LSD and IRS
-manual gearbox (no flappy paddle i never learned how to shift bullshit)
-motor, transmission, fuel tank, all within the car's wheelbase
-Sporty, rev happy, durable motor with great, crisp, sporty sound
-overall good looks from any angle
-3000 pounds or less curb weight

Now seriously, look at that list and think of all the cars throughout history which cover all of those. There really aren't that many. Everything on the list is critical, and the 8 has em all.

So what if the 8 takes more than 6 seconds to get to sixty? I guarantee you it is still faster than 99% of cars on the road in any given area of america. Not 99% of the models made currently, I just mean literally 99% of the cars actually being driven around america right now.

tmak26b 09-23-2009 12:28 PM

Your 08 is not 3000lbs curb weight, my 06 base is exactly 3000. I am not sure how yours can be any lighter stock?

Your list is kind of corny, no offense. It's like an STI driver saying how many cars are AWD under 2.5L and have turbos...

RIWWP 09-23-2009 12:28 PM

Hymee's engine dyno of pre-supercharger showed 232hp. I think the number is right on. Anything lower and your car has health issues.

Ignition(battery, coils, plugs, wires, alternator, etc...), compression, breathing(intake, filter, cat, exhaust), or fluid resistance (engine, transmission, or diff oil)

For example, the guy from KONI noted in his dyno process that they get the fluids to the right temperature. The Diff fluid being ambient normally meant a loss of 5hp on the dyno.

Every detail matters.

210-220BHP stock, +1

And i'm fine with that

Razz1 09-23-2009 12:42 PM

Dozer just woke up from his sleep.........

I've seen better......:cwm27: ROFL

Jedi54 09-23-2009 01:37 PM

stay tuned... :suspect:

yeah, I think TeamRX8 is still King of the Hill with something like 223 whp

Kane 09-23-2009 01:38 PM

Yeah - he'll be hard to beat - but he is pro so I kinda don't count it....

I've taken a car from 190 to 205 WHP in an hour....just sayin!

I think you should be able to beat me this time around.

Jedi54 09-23-2009 01:40 PM

we shall find out soon enough my young Padawan.

P.S. nice job on that 15 whp increase!

adamwzl 09-23-2009 01:55 PM

How did you do it Kane?? :suspect:

Kane 09-23-2009 02:01 PM

Tuning......dwell, timing and fuel..... once the sensors were properly scaled.

Same as always

Since when is the Renesis durable?

It's fine with the ex-try oil injector and ex-try oil metering

Just need to rev to redline every day, oil every 3k, and it's just dandy

Yah I just mean it's durable in terms of driving it hard at high revs, in sporting or track conditions. most motors, even if they have more power, cannot safely run at high revs all day and still be smooth as silk with no issues. The star mazda open wheel race cars use the Renesis for it's reliability/durability in demanding racing situations.

tmak26b 09-23-2009 03:08 PM

This doesn't make sense. This is about the true rating of the car stock, I am sure you can make 500HP if you have the time and money on it.
