Second Replacement Engine -- Warranty issues
Just got back from Mazda. My first replacement engine failed compression test. Hot start problems same as original engine. So it is covered under extended warranty but Dealer told me Mazda said I had to install a new cat conv and new, coils at the same time or they would not cover the replacement. A 1500 bill! The cat apparently is bad although I had no idea. I am astounded really and wonder what if any recourse I have as the engine fails the test, it is a covered part under the warranty. Shouldn't they have to replace it period? Is there someone I can call to contest the issue? Is this a common occurrence for a second replacement engine under warranty where Mazda is requiring other fixes? Car has 80154 miles on it.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Some people here have confirmed the CAT is covered up to 80,000 miles (I'm not 100% sure, so let's wait for others to confirm)
In regards to the coils and everything else, talk to the dealer and try to come to middle-groun: you bring them the parts and just pay for the labor.
you could save $$$ by sourcing the parts from a different place - like a vendor here. But you would need to bring OE parts.

There is definitely a fed emissions warranty that is 8 years/80k miles on the cat assembly. That said, you're beyond 80k miles now?
Your best hope is that the original complaint was lodged when your car had less than 80k mikes documented by the dealer and go at Mazda from that angle.
As to whether they can deny a warranted repair because of this? I doubt it. But them they can do anything until they're challenged on it.

Mileage is 80,154. Was not documented three weeks when I first had made appointment cancelled due to emergency.

they are full of ****, just want to milk you more $$$
it cost them (dealer) like 600 something bux for a new cat, but most of them will sell it to you at FULL MSRP price ---- over 1500 bux.
same thing for coils and other crap.
Go buy some new coils, then ask someone local to see if they can borrow u a cat for a day or so, pay them 50 bux or something. bring it back to those asswipes and tell them just do the fuxking engine warranty work.
no wonder nobody trust dealerships.

Tell them that you will pick up replacement parts on your own schedule, AFTER they replace your engine, and allow you to go to work with your own car, so that you can earn the money to buy the replacement parts.
Now, if they are trying to tell you that you current engine doesn't qualify for a replacement under warranty unless you are willing to replace the convertor and the coils, make them put that in writing, and then tell them that you are taking it straight to your closest lawyer for proper handling. That's blackmail.
And if you really wanted to, have them show you what's wrong with the coils and convertor before you agree to replace them.

Updating. Called MNAO. Started a report. Wasn't real happy with what "Travis" was saying when I told him that dealer advised in order to do warranty work Mazda is requiring replacing cat conv and coils. He basically said well we can't throw parts in a car that is still unsafe. I advised I drive car daily. Not sure what he meant by that. MNAO will check with dealer to see what is up. My goal is to at least get this ridiculous fix uncovered parts before we fix warranted engine in writing so I can sue.
Oh also, I spoke with Dealer before calling MNAO this morning and he said he spoke with Mazda and sure I can use my non OEM coils saving me about $250. Say what?!?! Mazda is requiring a fix but will allow non mazda parts? WTF! I told them yesterday I had already purchased coils and no way I was buying another set. yesterday they had said oh you need Mazda coils or no deal.

My last engine replacement that was covered by Mazda at 96,000 miles was installed with a catless midpipe on my car so...........If you were local I would let you borrow a stock cat.

I just found out my car needs a new motor at 69000, If I can get it through Mazda. I have only had the car for 2 years and put 8000 miles on it. I have changed the oil twice, not sure how it will play out.

Update #2. MAZDA North AMerican Operations called me back. They reiterated what dealer told me. no cat and coils at my expense then no engine under warranty. I said can you please send me a letter stating that so I understand what the issue is and "Travis" got huffy and said I can send you a letter declining coverage. I said I am just confused you just said it is covered if i get the other repairs and that is what I will do, just want it in writing so I can figure out a way to come up with all the money for the required repairs.
Said he would, I will be suing if I get such a letter. The next issue is do I need to arbitrate the decision before filing a suit. Not sure this extended warranty requires arbitration first.
I am very upset by what has transpired. That my allegedly defective cat conv. was 150 miles out of warranty and now I have to pay $1400 to get a failed engine replaced under warranty. I need the engine so I am over a barrel to say the least.
