His last words "crank it up" were meant for when you restart the engine with everything reconnected. Maybe Jeff should of said 'fire it up" LOL

MazdaManiac 03-24-2008 11:06 AM

Doing it the way I just described, you don't disconnect anything (other than removing the spark plugs).
If you put a 1" socket on a 14" breaker bar, you can easily turn the motor over by hand.

so i just recently got new sparkplugs...thinking of adding seafoam to my gas tank to hopefully clean the injectors etc. (60k miles on my rx8)

is putting in this stuff gonna destroy my new spark plugs or am i safe in that department?

Seafoam will not hurt your new plugs

How exactly do you disconnect the ESS connector? I can get to it I just cant release it.:dunno:

Thanks for any help

Bad idea.
Pulling the plug wires doesn't turn off the fuel injectors. Pretty good way to flood your motor.
Pulling the ESS is easy - from under the car. On a car without lowering springs, you can reach it on your back from in front of the wheel.

great info in here. Jeff, any idea when you'll be making this video?
Might wanna do this before the dyno meet.

RotorWheeee 04-06-2008 09:44 PM

Got this figured out
I have no idea how MM did this with one hand with out jacking up the car, hats off:bowdown:. The ESS connector is the most difficult part of this, followed by removing the caps on the intake nipples. I ended up jacking up the car sliding under to where I cold see the ESS connector and could get two hands on it . The end result is well worth it. I let it sit over night, smoked up the neighborhood in the morning:)
I'm running the other half of the can in the gas tank now.
Idle is smoother, and to my surprise the engine winds up effortlessly, I didn't think I had any issues in this area until after you do this and feel the difference.
For reference I'm at 110km's and I was starting to notice a small stumble at idle. I also did this through the lower intake method.

Jedi54 04-07-2008 12:13 AM

(I see you made it home safely, nice!)

Kjdakilla03 11-18-2008 08:21 AM

alfy28 11-18-2008 08:45 AM

Dang i wish i thought about seafoaming 3 weeks ago.i ended up doing the Mazda engine clean. looks like seafoaming cuts off a hour or 2 lol.

Ross_Dawg 11-19-2008 11:12 PM

this looks like something worthwhile... I'll do it this weekend. Thanks MM!

04RX8man 11-20-2008 07:09 PM

I def want to do it soon too but imight b stuck with only putting it in the gas because i live in an apartment complex and they prob will not like the white smoke if i do it through the intake manifold nipples....

More_Revs 11-20-2008 09:40 PM

I did mine in the gas tank as a quick clean up (plus my retired labors would probably be freaked out by the smoke) before a track day last month, car runs great, but the gas mileage has dropped from ~20mpg city/25mpg hwy to 15-18 city/~22 hwy for easy driving. The only thing I can think of is maybe the injectors were dirty and I was using less fuel, now that they're clean, it running very rich again. It has been few tanks since I did it and the mileage has not improved.

04RX8man 11-21-2008 12:21 PM

haha my city driving now is 15-16 so maybe i don't want to that would drop it to like 12 or 13 mpg....

Ross_Dawg 11-21-2008 12:36 PM

I'm getting average of 13-13.5 mpg shifting at average of 4k. Something is wrong :(

Jedi54 11-21-2008 12:38 PM

Hey Ross, how long since you changed coils, wires, or spark plugs? (not including the last recall from Mazda since they only change out 2 of the plugs)

alz0rz 11-21-2008 12:42 PM

bah, that is normal for me. i get 210 to the tank. works out to 14.5mpg.. tops.

robel82 11-21-2008 01:00 PM

Is this hard to do? Just wondering cause the stealership would charge me $125. Is that worth it?

yeah it's definitely about time. I don't have an exact number since I've only had the car since June...
