The same old argument
What is it with people that come on here and state how slow the RX-8 is. Have they driven one? Is it to make them feel better about their decision to buy another car a year before the RX came out? Or does it make them feel better to say that cause everytime they see an 8 they wish their car looked a little bit less like an economy car?
I don't really get it. It's slow? It's 0-60 is 5.9sec according to Car and Driver. That’s not lightning fast, but most vehicles don't achieve a 0-60 time of sub 6 sec. I drove a z28 before this car, so don't try and tell me I don't know what fast is. Of all the vehicles on the road, including SUV's, vans, trucks, 4 doors, 2 doors, ect, it's still faster than 90% of the cars on the road! So what now? There are many mods out there at this time that can make the car faster if they so desire. I guess it just fustrates me, and I want to shake people and say, "what the hell are you talking about?!"
This car is one of the best balanced cars on the road, overall, the car is quicker and more nimble than most cars on the road. It's the fastest car Mazda currently produces. You want to talk about how slow a car is, go to the hummer forums, but please, stop trying to make yourself feel better because your car acheives a half a second faster time to 60.

Not to mention the fact that there's a thousand more factors involved in the desirability of a specific car for a specific person. Fast drag times and fast lap times are not everyone's number one priority. Some people actually like having a unique looking car that is at least somewhat practical and doesn't beat you to death when you drive it.

so its not the fastest drag car out there...so what. just wave at them when you fly by them in a corner. power and speed are pointless if you can't control it. and thats where the 8 excels...in control and stability.
and it looks better than 90% of the cars out there too (IMO). personally i like having a car that isn't a silver civic or an ess-ewe-vee.

One could make a similar arguement about those that get their panties in a knot because someone has a different OPINION. Fast is a matter of opinion. I wish it were a solid measure of a car, then we wouldn't have people whinning, but it's not. What's fast to you might not be fast to me and vice versa. From driving the 8 I can say that in my opinion, the 8 is moderatly fast. Before anyone starts crying because my opinion varies, remember, it's just an opinion, I don't think that can be stressed enough.

Good point rupes,
I remember when the Acura Integra Type r came out. I don't recall as many haters as for the 8. Actually quite the opposite as everyone in the tuner scene couldn't have a conversation without honering the type r. type r this type r that. Meanwhile the type r is a race car out of the box and its 0-60 is 6.5. ppl that complain about the torque are usually ppl that have never autox a car b4 and are worried about something faster beating them at a stop light race. I am just happy we have another rotary car to enjoy.

It's just odd to me, people ask me what the 0-60 times are on the car, and when I tell them they say, "wow it's that fast?" Most people are surprised it's as fast as it is being a fully functional, well balanced, inexpensive Japanese car.
That’s why when I come here I can't understand what people are saying. It's not a Ferrari, it's not a turbocharged economy car, and it’s not a $50k car either, what are you expecting from it? It's one thing to not be as fast as you would like, but how can you say it's slow?

I'm guessing this is at least somewhat directed at me... I don't think the Rx-8 is slow, but I don't think it's fast either <shrugs> I prettymuch feel the same way about my car and it's faster than the RX-8.
14 second car, eh there are plenty of them on the market today it's nothing out of the ordinary and nothing mutiple family cars can't do.

Oh don't get me wrong, I’d be delusional to say there aren't faster cars on the market in the same price range. I'm just saying there are few cars that offer the amenities, looks, and comfort of our car, so I can't see why people quibble about how much faster the car should be.

The way I see it ppl calling 13+ second cars "fast" is a joke. some of us mistake "quick" for being "fast" and imo any street car under 13 seconds is "fast", otherwise your just quick in my book. To say that the 8 is "slow" is just a hater statement. "Slow" in my book is a car that is 16+ seconds.

The 8 is definitely slower in a straightline than a most of it's competitors. The numbers don't lie (though they're obviously going to vary). The Z, S2000, G35, SRT-4, GT Mustang, etc are all faster than the 8. The WRX STi and the Evo are much faster than it. But that doesn't make the car slow. You'll see a lot of people in other forums saying stuff like
"Man the 8 sucks so much because it's so damn slow."
"You can't possibly lose to an 8. My stock Camry can beat it."
"You lost to an 8? Were you riding a bicycle?"
"Get an 8 if you want to get smoked by every car out there."
"The 8 isn't a real sports car because it's so slow."
Like holy exaggeration Batman!

I guess here in the US we have always measured our cars by power and how fast they went from point A to B. It has been that way when I was a kid and when my Dad was a kid. Thats why we always looked for the straight away roads. I always liked the handling cars (europeon) when I was a kid so when I got the chance I bought a Porsche (Audi) 924 and later a Porsche 944. The 944 handled very well but the RX8 I believe handles better at least as I remember. The 944 compared to the muscle cars at the time was a dog but I gurantee you I got a lot more looks then they ever did. Compared to the 944 (and I love that car) the RX8 is a rockett, it handles great and it looks great I am in heaven. I do like to drive the muscle cars to go from point A to point B but I choose to own the car that gives me the most pleasure.

to me:
slow is double digit 0-60 time.
average times are mid 7s - mid 8s
quick is better than average times
fast is low 5s and under.
BUT...i didn't buy a drag car. i don't care if the honyota tibuccord is faster off the line. the car is "fast" enough for me, handles better than anything i've driven, is extremely comfortable, and it looks so good its going on my top 5 hotties list.

I'd say the difference for me is the RX-8 feels down on power compared to its competition, when I drove it it lacked in the power department TO ME, other clearly feel different.

I bought the 8 because of handling, even though it is faster then my 944 was. Power was not the deciding factor. Having power is great, but taking a corner much faster then most cars can ( especially ones that are supposed to be SOOOO much faster then you)...priceless

Many people on here including Ike, feel its not as powerful because of the Large Powerband. Ike's a little too use of his Turbo............................ as a matter of fact a lot of people are. That's why they say the things they do! I've seen too many numbers to show me other wise. Tell me another car besides the S2000 that has similar specs and can keep up with an RX8. Family cars, other opposition(350Z, G35, STi, EVO) and etc have much more Torque and HP. But yet the RX8 still manages to keep up to them and in some cases given equal driver out perform them! Kinda gets you thinking who has the lack of power!

Mentalhealth is overrated
regardless of how fast it is...I still get people staring at the car all the time. It has a different look from other cars out their combined with rotary power = a unique car

Maybe if you payed attention to how ike treats others you would see why i put it in that manner. In addition i was serious, i didn't like the way the wrx felt both times i drove it.
