I'm a firm believer in...anything worth a damn is never easy to achieve... yeah the RX needs attention, but personally, I love having my big *** sticking out from under the hood...and getting my hands a little dirty. If I wanted a spoon fed, gas and go car, heck I'd get a civic. I've owned 2 RX-7s in my time....and each one has been better than the last and they ALLL required things out of the ordinary here and there...SOOO call it a labor of love or whatever....either you get it or you don't...and if you don't....I'm sorry, you never will !

"The RX-8 has an aluminum hood that incorporates “Shock Cone” technology to minimize head injuries in the event of an accident with a pedestrian."
LOL--the way this is written it could be interpreted as meaning that the "Shock Cone Technology" will prevent head injuries to the driver in the event of an accident with a pedestrian. Somehow, though, I doubt that's what was meant.
"The trunk lip spoiler is required in Europe for fuel economy reasons."
Huh? How does the spoiler improve fuel economy?
"The spare tire is not standard in US."
I knew this all too well after having to shell out for the kit.
"The fender vents are not just for show, but do indeed help to vent hot air from the engine bay."
I thought that forumites here disputed this?

Hey, nothing like a good old stupid generalization. It's even better when it comes from a self proclaimed codger whose experience with rotaries comes from test drives and a media interview in days gone by.
Most of us understand perfectly why others would want something else, and are perfectly at peace with that. The fact that the RX8 is not a mass market conveyance is something many of us find appealing.

oh, and to the OP - glad you finally got one!

Bragging that you saved 13 grand will do nothing to increase the opinions others have of the 8. Then again, why should you care, especially from VW enthusiasts. Also saying that your 1.8T was faster (my 8 replaced a chipped 1.8T 5 sp. Passat that was NOT faster than my 8) or going on about lousy fuel economy (it's bad but not AS bad as many think) isn't helping either. I can clear 400kms a tank on my daily commutes, no worse than many friends and their various cars.
We often whine about stuff that doesn't help the image of the 8, but at the end of the day I don't give a crap what others think about ANYTHING that I choose to own. Love my 8, still haven't had the urge to replace it and I'm nearing 3 years - a record for me!

No one is bragging here

My Jetta 1.8T IS faster from 5-60mph on a roll. It dynoed 193 at the wheels with just chip, intake and exhaust. The torque is what makes it faster than Rx8 here. Your Passt is 1)heavier and 2)got less mod done to it compare to mine.
As for fuel consumption, I am only got 500km on 50L in my 1.8T. And I am aiming for 400km in the Rx8 after initial break-in with <4k average rpm and daily redline fun.
Regardless, I agree what you said in the last paragraph, and thats EXACTLY why I feel the urge to post it on vwvortex since I wanna tell them I love the Rx8 and tell them why I love it.

But I do have one - a Miata. I know that when I park at the beach my decade older Miata draws a larger crowd than the RX8s near by. Its true as the OP stated that some crowds seem to love the Miata but not the RX8, but I can only guess why as I also like the RX8. I found I did not fit in the RX8! I needed power seats due to back problems. I needed cloth seats as the leather had an uncomfortable feel. (I am fat with a bad back and found I could enter and exit a Miata easier than a lot of cars.)
I have always loved rotaries but have never found Mazdas current product offering to match my needs. The low sales seem to indicate others might feel the same way.
How many on this board ever test drove an R100 for a media interview?
Or autocrossed an RX2? Or an test drove an RX3?
I came real close to getting an RX7 convertible instead of the Miata but all three I test drove had body shake problems that the used Miatas did not.

Again...you don't own....you don't know.

I've said this from the start...this car has a VERY specific crowd that it appeals to. However, it was plugged hardcore from the start to run alongside mustang and other mainstream cars. Truth is, it's not a mainstream car and doesn't appeal to most. If you do happen to be one of those who do love it for what it is, that's awesome. However, the average joe isn't gonna see anything but a car that gets horrible gas mileage for the 159 lb/ft TQ it makes.
Sad but true.

I dont regret my 8...but I do wish I would have gotten an FD instead. The 2 seats and lighter weight just make it more of a drivers cars IMO(RX8 is as well of course). people comment on the low torque and gas comsumption...its not a traditional engines...has its advantages and its disadvantages. But I do think Mazda should never release a non-turbo rotary EVER again.
