RX8 "special edition" ??

Ok here we go, hello Mr. Obvious, longtime listener, first time caller. I have myself a 40th anniversary, the dealership and literature were saying it is a limited production run of like 10,000. Yeah limited my aunt fannie eh. But anyways down to the meat of the question. Does anyone know how I can find out what production number my 40th anniversary rx8 is? Is there a website that I enter my VIN or something? Hmmm just had a thought, 10,000 produced per available color per country or state??? But any help is greatly appreciated. This is more out of wonderment than vanity or ego.

Still love my RX8 zoom zoom

"* Limited availability to 1000 units"

MazdaUSA website list the number as 1,000 not 10,000. A quick look at inventory shows about half, six of twelve near PDX, of the 2008s available are 40th Anniversary Edition units. Mazda sold 912 RX8s in thefirst three months of 2008.

Oops forgot. - Congrats on the car Striker911. I love that color combo.

I doubt you can find the sequence number from the VIN. You could not on any of the MX5 special editions. All numbers courtesy of MazdaUSA.com in previous posts.

As far as I know, there hasn't been a special VIN number for a different trim level for the RX8.
This sound like a question for Zoom44. He may have an answer.

thats odd they gave you a number, I called mazdausa and the guy had to go do some digging and call me back a couple of days later. I was told that there is no indicator what "place" your car was in. All the vins will show it as a 40th anny but have no indicators of a place in the line.

i havent looked specifically into this but with the first shinka there was a way to tell and im certain that with the 40th A cars there is as well. They are only producing 1000 2008 40th A cars for the US. They have to all be built already since 2008 production ended months ago and production started a couple weeks ago for 2009s. 2009s will hit the ground here in about 5 weeks.

Unfortunately, you are not getting correct info from the Mazda rep on the phone. When he says they are still being produced he probably only means they are still for sale at dealers. Same type of response I've gotten from MazdaUSA, they're supporting the dealers who are still selling 2008s so they wouldn't want to admit that 2009s are already being produced. We've already seen pics of the 2009s on dealers' lots in Japan for a while now.

Unfortunately the only true "individually numbered, limited production run" was the 2005 Black Cherry Mica- colored Shinka. (they had a special numberplate in the engine compartment listing the production number) For 2006 Shinka became a trim level, and the 40 Aniversary edition became the renaming of the Shinka trim level on the following year... Yes, they were only a certain number of that particular trim level made but Mazda did not keep an individually numbered record of the production run. Unlike the Shinka as a trim level though (which came in a variety of colors) the 40 Ani only came in gray, with two tone brown/black interior.

By the way; did you hear that this year's special edition MX-5 run preorder sold out on just 10 minutes? Insane! (Red/black paint with the power-hardtop option and special edition black wheels... looks gorgeous in pictures... if only it had a rotary under the hood :-p

The 05 Shinka wasn't the only limited production, the 40th anniversary rx8 was a limited edition as well. Production was limited to 200 units in Japan, UK would get 400, Canada got 100 units, and the US received 1000 units. If you had a 40th ani rx8, you would email or call mazda, give them your vin, and they would tell you what your production number was.

Ask usnidc or batsupsidedown, both of them contacted mazda and received what production number they had.

Ninja, the "production number" is not the same as "individualy numbered" (I.E. the car came from the factory with a plaque that was etched
"Special edition# X of XX") the 2005 Shinka was the only model so equipped. so yes, the 2007/8 40 Anniversary was a limited production run of a trim level.
I'm pretty sure I could get the "production number" of my 06 shinka, as all cars come out sequentially from the factory in japan. Heck, the VIN number will tell you where you stand as far as production in regards to every other RX-8 ever made.

Doesn't make it any less special; just not "individually numbered"

Mazda RX-8 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

2007 saw the release of a special edition to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Mazda's rotary engine. The 40th Anniversary special editions were different in the Japan and North American markets. The Japanese version came in Marble White as an homage to the Mazda Cosmo Sport, which was initially only available in white. The North American version came in Metropolitan Grey Mica exterior with the interior clad in special Cosmo Red leather. It also had wheels of a new design later incorporated in the 2009 facelift, as well as an exclusive sport-tuned suspension with Bilstein dampers. Further upgrades included an enhanced urethane foam injected front cross member intended to improve steering feel.[8] In North America, this special edition was available only in 2008.
