no one will answer this question, first of all, people in rx8 forum are real mean people, not united at all. they'll laugh or put you down if you ask questions that they think everyone should know but you just don't. I had experience on it, so i know. I'll answer your question here, so far, the RX8 have had some minor problem cuz the car is so damn new. example will be engine flooding, poor gas mileage, the a/c is not cold...etc those will all be seen in the service bulletin (TSBS) you'll find it in the Tech garage in this forum. I have faith to the car, RX7s have open a bright page in car history, it's just rotary need more care than those toyota and honda out there, they're made for hardly drive, for people who don't wanna waste time to maintain the car, they're cheap, realiable, easy fix, and EVERYWHERE. Rotary engine is very sensitive to high/hot tempature, over heating is always the number 1 issue in rotaries, the RX8 is definitly a good car, both the look and the performance, if i want some big number car, i'll go for a mustang GT, but you don't want to get a car that can only go straight. Rotary engine is much light weight than a normal V6 , and it's smaller, so it can be mount lower in the engine bay so that'll give you a 50/50 car. trust me, the RENESIS is a very strong engine that will runs forever, i was told that the rotors in the renesis are much more powerful than those in the RX7s, the apex seals are perfect, the material are different too. So if you're willing to spend some time take care of the car ( it's fun), RX8 will be a very good car in all way.

With quotes like this you wonder why people are mean to you? If you don't like us, don't hang out here. There I was mean, but you had it coming. We'd be nice if you wouldn't say stuff like that.

Since I DO have experience with the rotary and can actually talk about it like I do know what I am talking about, let me just start by saying that it is my favorite engine of all. They loved to be revved up and are actually quite durable. There are 3 types of people who insult the rotary engine. The first type are the ones who remember the rotary engine from it's early development days of the late '60's and early '70's. Back then, rotary technology wasn't what it is now and there were many seal issues. This has long since been solved. The 2nd group of people who don't like the rotary are those who have only dealt with forced induction but have had no idea what they are doing. I will go out on a limb and say that there are more people out there working on their own cars improperly than there are people who do things properly. The rotary engine is not very tolerant for detonation when using forced induction. This is usually fatal. It is usually bad tuning that leads to detonation. In other words, more engines are killed from stupidity than anything else. If you don't have a turbo, this isn't an issue. If you do have one and actually know how to tune the car properly, it still isn't an issue. The 3rd kind of people who insult the rotary engine are simply those who know nothing about it. This is the largest group of all. It only takes one bad story to make everyone talk about the bad things that can happen. You never hear about all of the success stories though.

If the rotary wasn't a good engine, it wouldn't be in use today. It also just won it's second international engine of the year award. That's twice in 2 years. That's got to be good.

As far as overheating goes, rx8spiritR makes it sound like these things overheat for no reason. This is not true. It is no easier to overheat a rotary engine than it is any other engine. They do not like to be overheated though and this could be bad depending on how bad you overheat it. The simple solution is don't overheat it. This isn't a good scenario for any engine rotary or otherwise. Bad things can happen to any engine when you overheat them. Don't run out of oil either.

Basically the rotary isn't a weak or a bad engine. Don't let others make you believe that it is. It is simply less tolerant for dumb users. In other words, the little rice boys that drive around who only want to go faster but don't know anything about cars are probably going to hate these cars. They don't tolerate poorly executed modifications very well and that is what is most popular right now. The engine in the RX-8 if well maintained should run for a long time. This is no different than with any other engine. The rotaries that you hear of that didn't live very long were not taken care of. I personally know of 2 rotaries that my friend owned that both made it over 200K miles when the cars were parted out. The engines still ran too.

Just remember than any car will break down on you if you don't take care of it. No engine will live long if you abuse it. The RX-8 doesn't need any special treatment in regards to maintenance. You drive it, you change the oil, you get gas, you maintain the fluids over time, you check the brakes over time, etc and it keeps running. Show me a car that won't keep going if you do that.

We aren't mean people here on this forum and are actually very united. We are also very helpful and much more mature than most other forums. If someone has a problem with us, they probably were the ones who started the trouble. You have a legitimate question and we are more than happy to help you. We hope you choose the RX-8 and know you will be satisfied with it. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. If you drive the car and you like it, then you should get it. If you drive it but decide you don't like it, don't get it. It is really simple. Don't let other people's lack of knowledge about the engine scare you away. How do they know if they have never had one? Please understand that rx8spiritR does not represent the views of this forum and that his information is not necessarily correct. Others will respond with the correct answer when there is wrong information being passed around. That is probably why he thinks we are all mean here.

I will agree with what rotarygod said as far as peoples misconceptions of the rotary. I personally have talked to some people who reaction to the engine is they don't trust it. Usually the reasons they don't trust it is because they don't know enough about it. The reality is that there is less that can go wrong in a rotary than in a regular piston engine since there are only 3 moving parts which is less than you will find in ANY 4, 6, or 8 cylinder (I've got to find it again but a long time ago I believe I read something regarding a particular V-8 with over 90 moving parts).

rx8spiritR,

First off, let me point out that your broad accusation just accused ALL 10,427 (minus yourself) members of this forum. As one ouf the accused, I would like to speak on the subject. I'm not going to speak about cars at all. So if anyone reading is expecting constructive comments about the rx-8, please move along now.

It was very unfortunate that you did not get the answers you were seeking upon your query of the RX-8. I for one, do not remember ever reading your thread or what your questions were. Therefore, I'll be speaking in a general sense about regular members, new members and the conflicts that arise between them.

Do regular members pounce upon new members if the new member breaks the regular member's precieved rules? Yes, SOME do, not all. What are these precieved rules?

* Do a search before asking a question that has been asked 15,000 times.

* Don't ask asinine questions or comments such as, "Will the 8 beat a Viper in the straight line after I put an intake on it?", or " My buddy just ran a stock Civic Si and beat the 8 by 10 car lengths!"

* Don't start off posts that insult members directly!

There are probably more that I cannot think of right now. Most of these "rules" are simply common sense. So, it is not inconceivable to expect people to know these things ahead of time.

Many new users say, "I don't have time to do a search! Why should I have to!? ". You might say that now. I guarantee you that within a month, that same user will understand. The reason is that the same questions get asked OVER and OVER. To the members that frequent the board, this can get very frustrating. Especially when you are expected to answer the question for the 15,000th time.

The other two "rules" should be self explanitory.

Finally, let me discuss one more thing. Given the fact that this is a written forum, it is VERY easy for readers to misconcieve your intentions. People posting, who expect a serious answer, should take the time to word thier posts in a manner that is effective and non-insulting. Also, the use of proper grammar and punctuation is important if you want to be taken seriously.

There are always alot of arguments about this.
"This is not an english classroom!"
"I don't have TIME to do that CRAP!"
"I spend all day at work/school, I don't want to deal with that here!"

All those arguments are fine. However, don't believe that you will be taken seriously if you don't take your own words seriously! Furthermore, keep in mind that you may be unintentionally offending people or miscommunicating your own intentions!

rx8spiritR, it seems from your post today that English is not your first language. If that is not the case then I understand that it is more difficult for you to communicate in a language that is not native to you. Just keep in mind, that may be the reason that people respond to you in a manner that you find unfriendly.

It is unfortunate that you feel the way you do about us. However, if you stick around I believe that you will find that this forum is filled with people who are friendly and willing to help.

Very well said guy321. I can't say that I have ever seen a "mean" thead here unless the original poster started out "mean." I've even met some of the forum members at Mazda Rev-It-Up and they were some of the nicest guys I've met. So by grouping everyone as "mean,'' you are really insulting a lot of people. Plus I feel that this forum is very united.
