Thats great that yu are using an asking price from autotrader. That has no real world significance. You can ask whatever u want for a car. No way that person gets even close to that. Look at what this guy says.

"JUST bought an 05' RX8 6M with leather, power roof, 6-disc (GT package?) with 8,600 miles for $20,533.72 out the door including tax and registration. $19,002 for the vehicle by itself. Sounds like you could do a little better on the price.... but you're not getting TOTALLY ripped...."

So this person pays 20 for a loaded 05 but that person on autotrader is gonna get 20 fo an 04? Elara what are you smoking?

And since you cant really compare the RX8 to many cars, you have to take the closest thing. S2000, Z's, G35, subarus, you name it, they all have held fairly decent value

Compared to other cars that the RX-8 would be compared to (350Z, G35, Evo, STI, S2K, WRX, CROSSFIRE!, etc) it's not doing so well. But to say that it has one of the worst resale values compared to all cars is probably an exageration.

Now this post makes it absolutely clear that you are trolling, looking to talk people down so that you can buy a used car.

Aside from the fact that you're an ***, you aren't worth reading again. Enjoy your car after you buy it because its clear that you have no interest in the community, but just want to save a few dollars on your purchase.

plonk goes the *******.

"And I don't know where this auction thing is coming from either. ALL cars have low values at auctions- how do you think dealers make profits on them? They buy them, fix them if they need it, and resell them usually at a pretty decent profit. But you have to factor in all the time they spend, including buying, transporting, fixing them, cleaning them, etc. And that's an entirely different discussion. "

Auctions are what drives used car prices. You seem to know everything about cars and then nothing at the same time.

That's enough out of you. This is the second time that I've seen that you can't state your point politely, and at least the third time you've been warned. You're out of here. If you could even back up your idiotic statements, I'd give you another chance. But you're obviously a troll, with no point in being here other than to cause trouble.

At least you've still got Britney.

I think we should talk about how much Penn State football sucks and what a joke Derrick Williams is.

And you're gone, but I have to answer this too. Of course auction prices drive used car sales. But you seem to equate auction price with resale price, and while they are relative, as in one average goes up, the other average goes up, you can't base actual retail prices on one auction price you've heard of from a friend because of the differences in each specific vehicle. One car might need a new clutch, while all another needs is a detail. It's pretty clear you know little to nothing about used car retailing yourself.

As for autotrader- give me a friggin break! You've always got wiggle room on the price, which if you had bothered to read what I posted instead of trolling like a moron, you would have realized there was about a $2k +/- difference possible. But you, of course, know everything, including Britney Spears, so I'll just have to bow to your almighty intellect.

I thought it was a pretty fun discussion- I'll happily back off and admit I'm wrong if someone can post some stats to back up their comments. Ike has a point, it doesn't stack up against things like the STi, etc- but then, that wasn't the original point of the thread (at least, the way I read it) .

OK, I was wrong about that. Sorry.

Now, if you want to compare the RX-8 to an Accord or Camry, then DUH, resale value sucks. But when you compare it, on average, to all the other cars out there, it is right around the middle.
I disagree with the notion that the RX-8 can be lumped in the average bucket with the rest of the cars. Many of us RX-8 owners feel that we own a very non-average car, that while it may be mass-produced, it is nowhere near the scale of the average car, and it's still quite rare on the roads. We expect our great car to be in demand, because, well, how can you resist? Thus, we expect a higher-than-average resale value. (Maybe it's wrong to expect that.)

Yes, auction prices are always low. I remember looking a month back and saw mid-$15s for most 8's sold. (And there weren't very many.)

This gentleman already provided you with stats. You listed a car that was an 04 with 35,000 miles on it asking 20,000. he showed you an example of someone who just bought a loaded 05 with 8,000 miles on it for the same price. Obviously nobody with half a brain would buy the 04. Obviously the 04 is way overpriced and shouldnt be used as an example.

If that person gets 14,000 for that 04 they should be laughing all the way to the bank. You can go to an auction and get one for 12

Nobody is debating that a lower auction price results in a lower retail price. However, cask mentioned the auction prices and claimed that this is *the* resale value--it is not. There is obviously a spread between auction prices, at the lower end of the spectrum, and the private party values, at the higher end of the spectrum (retail being the highest). So the same car that got sold for 18K via private party would probably end up going for 15K at the auction.

Thats all obvious. The fact that auction price is lower than retail doesnt really matter. The point is if the auction price is low, the retail is gonna be low, which results in overall low resale value. VERY, VERY simple.

I think the reason that Elara doesnt want to admit that resale values are bad is because she feels personally attacked, like someone is criticizing her car.

Or maybe it's because you and your alteregos are attacking her...

No, the resale value isn't good, but it's about on par with the average american car and certainly not near the bottom.

All the signs are there. Overproduced and undersold resulting in massive discounts to the tune of cars with stickers of 35,000 selling for low 20's. So how in the world is anybody gonna get even close to 20,000 for an 04 with 35,000 miles on it??? It's just not gonna happen

Will you look at that. Dumbass made a new screenname. How charming. And it traces back to DerrickWilliams, also another perma-ban. So, not only a troll, but an already banned troll.

He doesn't seem to realize that one person buying at a very low price doesn't mean that's the norm. He can't be bothered to do any actual research, so he just makes stuff up with no actual examples. "I talk to people who buy them" and "so and so got it for $XXX." Good job. But if you look, almost no one is getting them for that. If you read posts in this forum, in fact, you'll see that. Unfortunately, I can't post exactly what my company pays for them, as I'm not allowed to post stuff like that, but it's right in line with everything I've posted on here. In any case, it's apparently time for an IP ban now.

If anyone else can come up with actual, REAL numbers, please let me know.

Nothing scientific, but up here in our neck-o-the-woods, a 2004 8 GT can be had for mid-20k. In contrast, a 2004 350Z coupe can be had for about 28k. Depreciation on the 2 cars is very similar. Of course there are some nut cases out there who ask huge money for their cars. And also there are some really good deals that makes me suspicious...... I'm looking at average prices as posted for my area on MSN.ca for my region.
FYI 2004 S2000's go between 27k-32k depending on mileage (but there are a lot fewer of them listed, I saw 5). G35 coupes are around $32k.
To say 8 drops like a rock is exaggerated. All cars are experiencing similar depreciation.

People are wary of the rotary, simple as that. Also, there just aren't enough people who can truly appreciate how nicely the RX-8 handles. Otherwise, they'd sell far more of them.

I used to think that used was the only way to go with an RX-8, given the used car prices. But then I hear people have been getting big discounts on the new cars.

Either way, the car is a steal for what you get: a unique platform engineered to provide the best handling possible with four seats.
