RX8 Reliability???? The truth??

Hello All....

I am new to the club... I joined yesterday....

I need to get some discussion going with regards to reliability stories that I've heard through different sites.....

Some people say that the car sucks.... that they had to replace the engine at about 20k miles... etc, etc....
Some other people coment that the car is great.... never had a problem... they love it...
I bought my RX8 about a month ago, and since I love it... I believe that it is quite a performance machine....... which leaves me with the question...... how did they take care of the cars that needed engine's replaced?? Did people abused them?? Don't forget that if you race the engine often, and peel out, burn rubber, etc, eventually your engine might give up at some point....

Does anyone have any experience with this issue.....

Besides that, my 85 N/A RX7 has around 200kmiles now. My 82 N/A RX7 has around 130kmiles. Neither have been rebuilt. I run the hell out of my cars, but I maintain them properly.

Based on your question you should have made a post in this thread.

I have 62,000 miles on my RX-8 and put on about 20 hours of track time a year. with zero major issues.

keyword is maintenace; rotary engines don't take abuse/negligence nearly as well as some piston engines, so so keep your fluids fresh and topped off, and the engine (as well as the car itself) will last a long time....

my 1986 RX7 had 266,000 km. when we rebuilt the engine over the winter! She has always run perfectly. My RX 8 is awesome! I drive both cars hard.

Just don't **** around with mods you don't understand and a little bit more diligent maintenance, that's all. And use the damn SEARCH button.

Yeah...lol...let the flaming begin. It's the right of passage for a n00b. I went through the same thing. Remember, it's always better to post in an existing thread than to start a new one. Even if it might happen to be slightly off-topic. Welcome to the forum!

one of my friends dad's stepbrother's uncle's sister's boyfriend's child's mother had told me that rotaries need to be rebuilt every 1000 miles. just flaming :]
don't believe everything on the internet. especially when half the people on most forums couldn't even tell you what a rotary is.

I think it just depends on the dealer how helpful they are and how quickly they can identify the problem.

If you look at other car forums, like BMW, ACURA and others you will see pretty much the same distribution of people who love their car and those who hate it.

i bought my 04 last may, used... it's a year now and I have yet to take this to a mazda dealership for any problems except mandatory recalls. I only have 15k miles on it so far, so i can't really tell you how it is many miles beyond that.

If you are in the San Diego county area, Mazda of Escondido is freakin' awesome. When I go in there and say hey, this is rattling, hey this isn't working right, they say ok, let's replace it. It's kind of nice. Had my cd player replaced (excessive skipping) and speedo cluster bezel (vibrated) replaced. It's nice to have a good dealer in the area.

Reliability has been very good up to 40k - My 5th gear synchro is going, and it is to be replaced by the dealer, I'm also getting the spark plugs replaced because my idle is alittle rough/stumbly. Afaik, the 5th gear synchro is an issue with the very early RX8's built in mid 2003 (that's what I have 7/03). I love my 8 and it hasn't been any less or more reliable than any other cars I've had.

Cheers,

Alex

I bought my 2004 6-speed in January 2004, undoubtedly made in 2003, though it did come straight off the boat the last week in January. I have had no major problems at all. I did have my keys need one replacement and rep[rogramming. I had to pay to have the metal rod under the driver's seat that holds the carpet ring indtalled at my expense (not much--about $30)--and you kind of expect such things when you're an "early adopter." The only thing I REALLY don't like, is the very noisy transmission bearings when idling in neutral and the clutch fully out. Mazda dealer said, oh they all make that noise; it's just how they are, etc. For what it's worth, my local service guy (not Mazda) says it shouldn't be that way, but he is basing this on general experience. Anyone know about this? That's it for me. Pretty hassle free.

Love your modesty by the way. Anyhow, my experience parallels chicmag382: dealer has been, "whatever you say" everytime I've gone in, which I admit has been rarely. But rarely is a good thing, right?
