RX8 + rain with a bit of tcs?

anyone find the rx8 way too tail happy in the rain? first day for me with the 8 in the rain. i have an abandoned warehouse place near me, and i was practicing my drifts, and i just couldn't hold on for more than like 3 seconds. i always lost it. does anyone have this problem?

oh and i've looked at all the tcs and dcs and what not. and have always thought there were 2 different functions, thats why when you hold it, it stays off, and has the picture of the car and tire marks lit up. but when i press dcs, and only that light shows. nothing kicks in. i slide completely, nothing intervenes at all. and if thats the case. what difference does it make when you hold the button for 9 seconds or whatever?

Stock tyres? stock alignment? tyre pressure? bad throttle control?

Difference between 1 press and press and hold in your instance is the ABS is off on the press and hold. Makes no diff for you as you noticed.

FYI this is a video of my wife on a skid pan which is wet and oily.

Stock tires are not the best in the rain, especially when it gets a little colder. All tires are a compromise and that seems to be the weakness of the stock RX-8 tires.

There's been debates for years about what, if anything, is different about the traction and stability control when you hold the button down. Not sure if it's ever been resolved to everyone's satisfaction.

I'm slightly confused... when you say lost it after 3 seconds.... what exactly happened? And what exactly were you doing? Cause I'm pretty sure that if you're trying hard enough in wet conditions, it wouldnt be too hard to force the car to lose control past the point where TCS would help...

TSC attempts to correct overspin on the rear wheels, generally through throttle modulation.

LSD is all mechanical, and just keeps 1 rear wheel from spinning alot more than the other rear wheel. So if there is differences in the traction between them, the one with the greater traction will still hook up.

DSC attempts to correct underspin on any of the 4 tires when comparing spin rates, throttle, and steering input, to correct what it detects as a slide, and it generally takes the form of applying brakes individually a calculated amount on opposing wheels..

ABS attempts to prevent constant locking of the brakes and sliding of the tires, so you can maintain some directional control while panic-braking.

Someone needs to make a clear video in the snow or on a skid pad of exactly what happens with the different modes. On/Tap/7sec

i have a huge abadoned lot near my house. going for 3 seconds, and losing it, was side ways for 3 seconds, and losing it. i'm pretty sure its just the rain though, and it was pretty cold, so the front tires didnt hold me well enough to prevent me spin outs. i'll try again as soon as it dries up.

and the skid pan video won't load for me

and so the only difference bewtween press, and press +hold is abs?

I found the same thing and the biggest difference was the temperature with both the OEM and other summer-spec tires. If it's hot and wet, they are fine and predictable, but cold + wet (under 45 decrees F, or so) and there is weird snap oversteer.

How exactly were you attempting to drift? Were you just trying to crank the wheel and power through it? If so i don't see that working out to well. Nothing wrong with the car. This seems more to do with driver skill and throttle control.

i'm going to be honest, it probably is me...but the thing is, i never had a problem in the dry before, but i am not amazing, so i guess the dry gave me more room for mistakes, where as the wet was i had to hit it right or spin out. i just wanted to see if other poeple had good or bad experiences in the wet while drifitng.

i'll drive with wheels turned a bit, and power through it. (not floor it i know how to control throttle)

i'll drive with wheels turned a bit, and give a quick clutch dip.

i've tried some aggreseive weight transferring, (flicks, and hard turns) but does don't seem to be too succesful in the wet.

You've already wrapped a car around a stationary object and your dumb enough to try to drift in your new RX8? I guess you never burned your hand on a stove when you were growing up.
