rx8 driving me to poor house..and lovin it

Am I the only one on here who looks back atleast twice at his car as he walks away from it? Am I the only one here that revs the car at any given opportunnity and sees the low fuel light go on at 145 miles on the trip meter? At almost 3 bucs a gallon for premium gas I am spending almost 30 cent a mile! This car is draining me...I love it but how can i be getting barely 11 mpg??

well my rx8 get way more mpg and much better power and feel on 87 ( good name brand ) here. Give it a whirl for one tank and see how it treats you.

If you're getting 11 mpg, you've either got a lemon or you're driving with too high rpms all the time, instead of shifting gears.

Gee, I wonder why you're only getting 11mpg? This car is notorious for sucking gas to begin with, and the more you get into the upper rpms the faster it will drink the Go-Juice. I'm not saying you should drive like a granny, but if you were more sensible maybe you would get more than 145 miles on a tank.

I drive normal most of the time & I'm only getting about 160-180's a tank on city driving shifting at about 3000rpm all the time.Freeway driving is decent getting around 220-240miles per tank if it's all driven on freeway.

Almost all my driving is in the "City" and my mileage also sucks. Not as bad as 11 mpg, but between 13 & 15 mpg. Fortunately, I only liive 1 mile from work so when I go broke I can walk. I think one of the reasons the mileage has been so bad is that the car really does not have a chance to warm up before I shut it off. So. it is running on Choke the whole way to work. Then, when I come home its the same thing. When I get the chance to put Highway miles on it the mpg does get up to 18.

Are these fairly new? I didn't start getting good gas mileage until I had put some miles on it.

(see if you think of 18mpg as 'good', then there are no problems! Glass half full )

Just wanted to give you a heads up, search the forum for carbon lock. don't know if it is true but i know that any short trips daily like that are not good for any engine, builds up carbon and sludge. i have read that rotary are especially bad for this, read a story of a rx 7 that basically locked up after years of doing short one mile trips with no good warm up. just trying to help, I think I would walk or drive the long way with some high revs to keep her clean!

My 8 has just over 12K on her. Though I know very seldom do I leave 1st & 2nd Gear before 5-6K RPM, 3rd through 6th I usually shift at about 3K RPM. Between both City and Highway I am averaging just over 300 Miles per fill-up. So 15.9GAL / 310 = 19.5MPG. Not too bad I guess, But hey... If you want good gas Mileage may I suggest the Chevy Metro!!! If you want style, handling & speed may I suggest a 2nd job to pay for the gas of your 8!!! I use Mid-Grade gas as my 8 was purchased used and I was told that was the grade the previous owner used. Don't know if I will get better or worse results by using a higher or lower octane, but she seems to run well enough on her current diet!
