Uh, not sure I agree with that. The 2009+ models have some significant upgrades over the 04-08's. New street prices have been reported in the $22k-25k range which is within spitting distance of similarly-equipped sporty- (not sports-) cars.

Oh hell yes, it's worth it. I've owned my 2010 R3 since October 29 and I've been having the time of my life driving it.

I tend to experience some amount of buyer's remorse with every major purchase I've made in my life, but not this time. Pure joy.

Basically all you need to do is test drive one and you will fall in love with rotary engine as well as the way the car handles and how well balanced it is.
