RX-8 Trouble

I have been reading around and i have noticed people talking about redlining the 8. However I think I did this once and here is what happened.
I was driving onto the road and got on the median, by this time i went up to about 18mph. Then i saw my chance to get in the lane and put it back in first gear and stepped on it and i didn't see it redline, or hear the noise it makes when you redline a car, but i heard like a pop. I thought i had ran over something that popped my tire cause then i heard what sounded to me like the air was coming out of the tire, but pausing every half a second when the hole would touch the ground and keep the air from coming out. Well then my check engine light, and my battery light, and i think the oil light, turned on. Then my car turned off. So i got it taken to the shop and they told me that there was a "misfire" that caused some sparkplugs to blow out, some screw somewhere got loose, and i don't remember what else. It was some time ago. Has anyone had this problem, and was it caused by redlining it, or did i do something else

How long have you had your car?

I'm sure it safe. I do it multiple times daily. If you've had the car for a while the problem could be that you DON'T redline it. You could have accumulated carbon in the combustion chamber and when you took it up to redline created a hot spot which could have casused detonation or pre-ignition.

If the car is relatively new you may have had a faulty spark plug or a bad tank of gas. Lots of possibilities.

I got it used so i don't know how the previous owner drove it, ive had the car since december. I need to find a place to redline it cause around here the cops are everywhere. So redline at 1st gear once a day?

You've had the car since december and haven't found the redline but once? I can't even fathom that. All the power in this motor is above 6K! The peak power is made at 8500!

I didn't say you had to slam your foot on the floor like you are drag racing, just don't **** it until you hit a higher RPM. You never drive on an interstate or major 2-lane (in each direction) road with a 45+ speed limit?

I just wouldn't even have shifted to second. I would've left it in first and shift it into second at about 25mph. That's just me. What does everyone else think?

what so bad about redlining first gear? with the gearing reduction the motor actually sees less load in 1st than in 2nd and less in 2nd han 3rd etc etc.

I redline 1st and 2nd gear EVERY day. I would not however, upshift back into 1st at almost 20mph.

There's a dude here in New York. He said he never revs past 4k and he seems to be proud of babying his engine. He brags that he gets 20mpg in the city if he doesn't rev past 3k. WTF?

I wonder if his Renesis will pop if he redlines. Hahaha!

Don't know as though it actually is a harder shift, but it always feels like it. When it comes to a notchy shift, the 1-2 is always a little bit worse.

I don't know as though it's any worse, but I know that doing the 1-2 shift is harder on the 2nd shift syncros because of it's frequency. In a few of the other cars i've had, that specific syncro has always been one of the first to go. Hope this tranny is made to take it...i know it has triple syncros in the first 3 gears.

I just don't get a good feel on the first gear . It's seems like I'm beating it up to much , if I redline on that gear .

You should search this around here, some people have had problems. I redline 1st gear but am generally very gentle on my 1-2 shift.

Not if you double-clutch. If you double-clutch and it goes into gear smoothly, you know you did it right and were kind to your synchros. Then, match revs before letting your foot off the clutch. Works like a charm.... and it's fun.

Cheers

I agree. I redline first all the time. And also, I've put it into first at 18 mph, but yeah, it is smart to double clutch. People mention first being blocked over 12 mph, but I've never had that.

My experience has shown the RX transmission to be more 'old sports car' like; it doesn't really like 1st gear unless you are at a standstill (oh ya, it will DO it, but doesn't like it) and 2nd is so low anyway that the revs build quickly into the power band. You can indeed double-clutch while downshifting with OK results but I find that if I just rev-match while downshifting (works great with heel-and-toe) the trans just falls into the next gear slick as anything.

I mostly agree. I rely upon the synchros when downshifting into 2, 3, and 4 and just simply match revs. However, I find it necessary to double-clutch when downshifting into 1st unless I'm either crawling or at a stop.

Cheers

whatever the problem, it was not caused by redlining. maybe it was just a backfire & plugs and not related to more serious issues, maybe not. the only way to find out is to take it up to the redline again. doesn't need to be foot on the floor acceleration - it can still be a nice smooth run up to 8k. you don't have to go right to the beep, just need to get to 7-8k preferably in 3rd. highway is recommended for that, tho.

downshifting to 1st is fine. tho (imo, of course) completely unnecessary in routine driving. & +1 to mwc - it can be fun. especially the high rpm screaming as you DS to 1st coming up to a stop.
