Ouch for the automatics.
Nice blurb - glad to know somebody else who knows and uses the term "polar moment of inertia", although he got the wording mixed-up a bit.
Bottom line - he would like to own one. Good for that.

I'm sorry, but that review isn't worth the ether it's written on. Forget the fact that the author doesn't even know the difference beween its and it's, which is such a basic rule of writing, but he reviewed an automatic on a track, for God's sake! I mean, no disrespect for the automatic owners out there, but please, it's NOT track car! That's like reviewing a movie based on the trailer, or reviewing an album by reading the liner notes. Complete waste of time.
(Please stand by for my review of riding a bike with training wheels in the Tour de France. :D)

That's the first auto-transmission review I've read so far. I understand the points he was trying to make: The automatic transmisison version of the '8 is a poor representation of what a rotary car should be. He did mention the tranny and engine together when he commented about the engine's performance, so I'd say it's a good, honest review.

OK, but it just seems like he's trying to review the RX-8 in general, yet he's starting with the wrong car, which makes the whole thing kinda pointless to most buyers, and completely irrelevant for anyone who plans to use it as a track car.

Yeah, it would be a fine review on a forum like this one, but it purports to be a professional review, and from that perspective it's kinda pathetic. So it goes.

DAMN, MY EARS ARE RINGING! I was "reviewing" a purported review, not a Forum posting. Plus, I already said "it would be a fine review on a forum like this one" and "[a]s an amateur review it's fine." Not sure how many other ways I can qualify my comments.
Lighten up. Sheesh.

I love my auto for cruising but as a track day tool, it just doesn't have the gearing to cut the mustard.
1st gear tops out 36mph or so & (when in 2nd) you can't downshift into 1st until 29mph.
2nd tops out at 74mph or so.
So yer stuck tryin to make the best times while mostly in 2nd gear in the WEAK part of the power band.
I noticed driving hard that I'm taking turns at about 40-45 mph & I just CANNOT power out of them, I'm just stuck waiting for the revs to get up but by then the next turns already here so on the brakes again... At other times you might hit a turn where it'd be nice to drop it into 1st at about 35mph or so but since the 'M' won't allow it til 29mph your stuck in 2nd at the bottom of the power band... now this is completely track dependant but you can see how you have to have some gearing to back up the power otherwise you just gotta wait.
edit: i didn't get to read the article either but I was merely stating my observations.
