Rx-8 Theft

I haven't heard much here about anyone's car being stolen. Has anyone heard anything about whether they have been frequently stolen or if they are easy to steal? Up until now, I have only been concerned about vandalism when I drive but was curious if the 8s are a frequently stolen vehicle.

Only one I've read about here was a guy who got his lifted from the parking lot at LAX. Search and you'll find it.

Seems that the "smart key" technology works well as a theft deterrent.

There was that guy who got his 8 stolen at his house at gunpoint. But I guess that doesn't really count since he gave them the keys...

Actually, the biggest theft deterrent of the RX8 is that it's so distinctive. Thieves tend to steal cars that "blend in" and don't grab attention. Which would be easier for the cops to spot:

1. The cherry-red RX8
2. The gold Honda Accord.

Not totally true. I remember seeing that Porsches are popular cars to steal for committing a crime. Not only offering performance for the getaway but a little protection from gunfire coming from the rear. Not sure how true that is considering that most police departments have non-chase policies these days, let alone firing from a moving vehicle.

I don't suppose Pewter Muranos would be a good one? That seems the only way I'll get an 8 in the next 3 years unless I hit lotto.

a majority of theft these days are either, owner left car running with keys in it, or pro job where they were towed. Or the were "stolen" ie owner can't afford it anymore etc. etc.. or other fraud.

Also, the biggest driver of car theft is chopping them for parts, so the 8 has a smaller market could be a good thing.

I figured that since I had not heard of any stolen-it was least likely to be taken.

The fact that they don't really blend in with their surroundings certainly help and I'm sure it also helps that the parts don't really retro fit on anything else. I know a lot STi's that are stolen for this reason (hids, wheels, bumpers, wing, hood, engine) you name it and it can fit in/on most imprezas with little to no work.

Don't really blend? Here in PR one of only two 2005 Ford GT was stolen. I wonder if that car blends with the others in the highway. LOL

O.o someone has a GT in PR? Good lord. There wasn't enough road to properly flog my friend's 308, I can only imagine how..restrained.. the GT driver must be.

Bueno, panita boriqua, te puedes asegurar que ese GT robao fue para un tremendo joy ride. :D

I'll bet that within 2 hrs, that car was in a ship container. And off the island within 24.
