Overall I am happy with how Mazda handled the engine fiasco so I am considering a Series II. I do wish they would share what they already know but I see why they do not.

Is this survey only for failed engines or do you want data on OEMs that are still running as planned?

Running as planned is fine................I filled it out and I am good from day one.

He's going to request updates from time to time, so if you do go South, then it will be caught on the next update.

WE NEED GOOD ENGINES TOO!!!!

We need to be able to see what might be different about keeping engines going vs dying off quickly.

Send me a PM with an email, or email me with your RX8club ID.

As I have said before the Renesis is basically an FC RX-7 engine with Side Exhaust Ports.

And IMO the number one issue causing bad compressions was Mazda's omission of any middle oil injector/weeper for the middle of the Apex Seal..Mazda has Always had a middle oil supply in every 13B since the FC...except Renny 1.

Oil Pressure is the next issue where Mazda goofed, particularly at high RPM.

IMO the "other" issue is long term "wear" of bearings subjected to sustained High RPM, above 7500 RPM.

These are MY Opinions.

It would be very interesting to visually see the Parts and Data Mazda takes out of the US reman plant, one would think the data would be consistent to all the engines opened in Japan for inspection tests and replacements.
I generally agree with your opinions on it. I am just a bit tired of theory and opinion without any data to back it up. Time will tell if I get enough responses, and if they will lend any information or directional trends on if there are things we can do that will assist in keeping the engines healthy.

I don't want to exclude 2009+ though. Separate data set, but I can't refuse data

Branding is going to get more detailed than needed I think. Opening it up to that level of granularity will mean that I will need even more results of the different brand/type/weight combinations to get to a trend.

I also don't know all the brands, and wasn't going to go through alot of "what about..." revisions

Thanks for your input!

Happy to Participate in the Survey...only If you want an Australian Guy and a Series 2....do you want me to PM you with an email address??

Please do not get me wrong...I salute you guys and your hard work , I just hope the "integrity" of the input info is accurate as possible, after all owners with engines done under warranty never really know the real reason for replacement or failure because the dealer does not crack the engine open to see..as we know poor compressions can be Apex and or Side Seals, etc.

Cheers

Results are kept per engine. Very easy to filter results based on certain answers (such as model year), and generate the reports to match.

I also recognize that people may not be aware of the real reason why their engine failed, but there are enough data points that we should be able to start seeing trends by the time we get to ~50+ engines.

You had a series 1 as well correct? That would suggest that you would fill it out twice, using 2 different engine IDs, one for each.

Something to ponder.

I was just reading through OD's thread about "keeping your engine cooler" thread and there was a lot of talk about heat(and even more so on humidity) and it came to mind that maybe at some point you might want to consider adding at least a general location that motor was used in to the list of questions? I'll let you decide.
Maybe just state for those in the US and countries for those outside?????

Either way.....it gives the thread another bump for the evening!

C'mon people, get your engine ID and fill it out!

Just did my part. I'm extremely pleased with the range of questions, and I seriously hope I have helped in figuring this engines quirkiness out.

THANK YOU!

...for providing an email address with the pm. You broke a streak of 8 people asking for an ID without giving an email address like the instructions say.

Come on people

Looking back at what I put for RPM ranges on the survey, I think I would have to say I over-estimated what I actually do, i.e. a lot of 4k shifting on the survey when in actuality I do 3k. It was hard to think about it while sitting at work for so many hours away from driving.

Most people do over estimate their shift points. I paid attention to mine when I drive with my wife in the car (who has trouble at 4/10ths of what I can do with the 8), and was surprised to see how low I shift.

I would put the 'include email in the PM' as the first line of your original post. I read your first post, then read the entire thread, decided I wanted to participate and just sent a PM. Needless-to-say by the time I finished reading I forgot most of what was in the first post

I even said to myself after I sent the original PM, maybe I should send a PM with my email address, and then was like nah why would he need that?

Either way, hope all this data provides insight somehow, someway. Very cool idea!
