Unhappy RX-8 Insurance!

I just got off the phone with my insurance agent. I wanted a quote for insuring my RX-8. He said the RX-8 is classified as a high performance car and my rate is $3,000. I have no points and I am 39. This is bull - the RX-8 has 4 doors?

Has anyone else got a quote?

Angry BULL!

It's very simple, you need to find another insurance agent. You can do much better than that. Are you accident prone, have you have many claims? cuz that could have a lot to do with the quote.

What state do you live in? I know New Jersey is a nightmare for insurance. Obviously many factors can affect the final premium. Either way you should shop around.

not sure what state you are in, but my brother has AAA. for his insurance, he lists his old 1985 Civic as his primary car, and his 2003 330i as his secondary 'occasional' car. of course he drives the 330i a lot more this keeps his premium down to under $2k per year, and he's only 27. hope this helps

After seeing this thread I called up my insurance agent - State Farm, in the Philly suburbs, and they quoted me 503.12 (per half-year), so 1006.24 a year, with the same deductible and everything as my current 12 year old RX-7. I'm 38, no points.

They didn't see the RX-8 listed for 2003 model year, but apparently found it listed for 2004.

My insurance agent gave me a quote off the RX-7 model. They would need a Vin # to give me a accurate quote. I thought $3,000 was high. I feel a little better.

I live out side of Philly Pa.

If your agent quoted you on a FD then it will be WAY off... Insurence companys see "Turbo" and they said "We can charge this guy out the ***!" My mom's new Golf TDI has a turbo, so its a "High performance vehicle" and the insurence is quite high.

RotorMotor or JerryR -

Any chance I could get one of you to call your insurance agent back and price out a 350Z Touring Model?

I was able to get a price on that from my insurance company [Progressive], but not one on the 8.

If you got a quote on the 8 at 1200/yr. and a quote on the 350Z at 1300/yr. that would give me some comfort in knowing that I am not about to get totally screwed on insurance rates, b/c the 350Z only raised my monthly by like 25 bucks over what i pay now for my 99 Miata.

Thanks in advance!!!!!

Haha.. that's a good one.. :D

For a 38 yr with a clean record $3,000/yr sounds very expensive and incorrect. Like others said, shop around.

I heard there is an insurance company out there where they only charge your monthly insurance premium by mileage. What they do is put a gps tracker on your car and track how many miles you've driven. So if you have a car and its sitting on your driveway but you do drive it like once a week your insurance should be very very cheap.

Just think about it you have two cars and use one for your daily driving and the other for weekends, you can just get the normal insurance coverage for your everyday car and get the mileage tracking insurance for the other. You're sure to save a lot of money.

All insurance companies base your premium, in part, by how many miles you'll be driving the vehicle a week. Interesting though that the premium will fluctuate from month to month depending on how much you drove that month???

Aside from the fact that I'll be driving this car more than a day or two a week, I'm not sure I want somebody knowing exactly where I go, when I go there, how long I'm there, etc. Talk about an invasion of privacy! But for those who don't mind, I suppose that's a pretty sweet way of buying insurance (just don't be taking your car to the track, to popular street-racing venues or drive over the speed limit, because they can track all of that with GPS as well and those premiums won't be staying low for long....)

I went to insweb.com to get a ballpark quote on the RX-8. The quote from American Family was about $610.00/6 months. I'm pretty confident my current insurance company (State Farm) can beat that, though.

I'm 43 with a clean driving record. The quote also included a discount for multiple cars (second car is a Nissan Altima).

Not a good idea.
GPS tracker = speed monitoring

Your premiums might go up when the insurance company sees you going over 70mph on a regular basis (not that anybody here would ever do that of course). There is a precedent for this - some car rental company used GPS trackers in their cars to monitor driving behaviour and arranged to have speeding tickets sent to the customer. It was being fought in court and I never heard the outcome.

Hmm? I don't think the insurance company will actually track the speed of the car as well. That would mean that the insurance company has to pay whatever company that lends the service of GPS tracking more to follow the speed of the car too. And everybody knows how cheap the insurance company is when it comes to paying people. And I know the use of gps is not cheap. The company I work for uses gps tracking on their delivery trucks, so that they know where their products are going.

Also since my work sends me to out of state (california) often they have to reserve a rental car for me. And I definitely don't drive at speed limit.

Hey pelucidor do you happen to know which car rental uses gps tracking on their cars?

Also an insurance company wouldn't need to employ people to scan GPS equipped cars in real-time - they could just log the GPS data (or intermitent samples of it - say every 5 minutes) and run a program once a week to see which vehicles covered too much distance in a set time over the last 7 days.

The additional cost to track speed is negligible compared to the cost of setting up the GPS in the first place. Think about it. A vast majority of the cost of setting up a system like this is in infrastructure and hardware. Adding a little bit of extra code into a program to say "Ok, he went from point A to point B in X amount of time, now figure out his average speed" really isn't much.... I'd be willing to bet my deposit money that if they're tracking your mileage via GPS, they're tracking your speed as well, as your driving behavior is as important, if not more so, as how much you're driving your car when calculating your risk of accident.
