yes rotary engines do get stronger as it ages, as most engines do once they're 'broken in'

so when does the peak performance point finalize, where more miles just mean deterioration and breakdown? (sp?)

I doubt anyone knows for sure yet, probably not even Mazda; also should vary by car.

...per C&D, right before the engine dies.

This is no different from any other car that has been broken in properly. Plus, this is a repost.

Blasphemy. Let's never bring up this subject again since it's already been talked about mildly. Bury this thread just like the others, now!

That's different than a LOT of cars..Look thru C&D and find 10 cars with THAT much difference.

Don't confuse automobile journalism with science. There are way too many variables that the auto mags don't control that influence the performance numbers. It could be something as simple as different drivers launching the car at different RPMs or different track/weather conditions.

Yes, the engine does break-in which reduces internal friction but to say that it accounts for the difference in performance is a stretch.

The difference was that the first time the test driver forgot to drink his coffee, and the second time he had 3 cups!

Might have some truth to it since quite a few members have reported getting better fuel mileage after 5,000 & 10,000 miles on their car.

Best part of that page was the 11qts of oil the used up!

"Racers say rotary engines get faster as they age, the engine's best lap always being the last one. The RX-8 didn't disprove the theory after 40,000 miles, cutting its drag sprints down to 5.9 seconds for 60 mph and 14.6 seconds at 96 mph through the quarter."

It's good to know that it improves that much over time, as I have been very happy with the straight line performance thus far. I just calculated that 11qts over that time is one every 3600 miles. That must mean that oil consumption drops over time as well, because if memory serves me correctly they beat the every loving crap out of that car, as I think they do with everyone, remember the WRX that they toasted the clutch on from doing repeated 3k dumps for launches.

Oh yeah and , but who cares.

I'm at about 29,700. I'd be curious to drive an 8 with under 10,000 to see if i can notice a difference. shrug

Why would the braking be any better after 40k? I would think it would be worse.
