drive once a week, and drive slow. or buy a prius, and drive your r8 like crazy every weekend. so that way the gas you saved on the week day you can use it all on weekend.

Actually, I do think of the 8 as two different cars. There's the "practical" 8, when I'm running errands around town or traffic is heavy, where I shift early, go easy on the gas, and manage a not-so-bad 17 mpg. On weekends, with a nice twisty road, I drive the "sports car" 8, shifting closer to redline and having fun with it.

Actually the poor gas mileage was a safety feature added to the RX-8. It prevents drivers from falling asleep behind the wheel by raising your blood pressure as you watch the gauge drop while sitting at red lights.

For long distance driving they combine the poor mileage feature with a small tank so that you have to stop often and refill, giving your legs a stretch.

They're just looking out for you.

Sure, easy enough.

Don't drive it and get a bicycle.

Drive on the highway at about 3700 RPM in the summer.
No stop-and-go
No warm-up cycle.
Mileage will improve 30 to 40 %

If you push the "Sport/Economy" on the bottom left of the dash it will reprogram the ecu to go from "sport" mode to "economy" and the gas mileage will dramatically increase.

Let me put it this way.....

Last week I hit a new all time low for a tank full 10.9 MPG, this car is a gas pig plain and simple worst mileage I have ever had out of a car.

If you want it to save gas leave it in the garage.

I just got it used about a month ago. They said it is about 18mpg, but it is about 13 with mine, and with premium gas that you have to put in there I will soon go broke. Sorry, guys if you are replying, do not use technical terms. I am a girl, no mechanic. :-) But I definetly love the car :-)
