Seriously.. FML..
Insurance is mostly cheaper than most sports cars though. Mainly because it's a 4 door instead of 2. Not sure how much I'm paying now. But you won't regret it, if you wish to get the car. Especially for the ladies..

some advice from an older guy
My first car was a Triumph Spitfire -- which taught me a lot about auto maintenance! My first car as a married guy was a generation 1 RX-7, and in October bought a 2010 R3 since my daughter is about to graduate from college.
Go ahead and get a good used Rx-8. It will do all the things you talk about -- teach you good car ethics, some things about dealing with dealers, and making decisions about tuning and upgrades.
Just don't drive it crazy. This is a superb handling car, but it has its limits. Do not go for off-the-line dragging or get involved in street racing -- your insurance rates, even on your parent' account will go stratospheric immediately.
Have fun, learn a life lesson in buying high quality, but fun to drive cars, and be safe!

go for it
hey dude, i just got my rx-8 and my insurance is not much different than when i had a Civic. The only thing i should mention is that it really is a gas guzzler! but i love it. checking oil tkaes 5 minutes tops every couple of fill ups so its not anything to worry about. And i thought itd be hard not to be able to shut it off when its cold but it warms up pretty quick. I live in Toronto and we get nights that are -25 and it still warms up pretty fast. Gas would be the only thing to consider. My civic would cost me about 120-150 for gas/month and this car i pay about 80 a week. (i do drive a fair amount but nothing crazy). so keep that in mind. your gas budget needs to double at least (compare to an economical car).
amazing drive, sounds great and gets lots of attention from the ladies
cheers
