rx-8 Eating Oil?

Ok so this may sound stupid ... but i just got my rx-8 and have not driven it enough to know .... Does the rx-8 actually eat oil, is this a myth? if not how much oil does it eat on average (yes i know you will tell me to check my dip stick ... but im still asking!)

again ... sorry if i sound retarded im new to this car :P :banghead:

nycgps 03-24-2008 04:29 PM

Oh my god ...

rev44 03-24-2008 04:30 PM

it is designed to use oil to lube the motor. I check my dipstick every 3-4 fill up. Usually add about 1/3 of a quart then.

alnielsen 03-24-2008 04:30 PM

Oil is injected into the combustion chamber to lubricate the internal seals. This oil comes from the engine sump. You should be checking your oil level at least every other fill of gas. You may not need to add oil at that time, but you need to check.
This is a very basic question. You need to start reading the FAQ's and the forum Stickies to get up to speed on the car.

laythor 03-24-2008 04:31 PM

it's normal for the RX8 to use oil. Search around a bit on this forum and read your owners booklet.

JRichter 03-24-2008 04:31 PM

Mine drinks it... It doesn't eat it.

Jedi54 03-24-2008 04:32 PM

tom: welcome to the forums!

The first thing I would suggest is to sit down and read your owner's manual. Please don't take that as a jab at you, but it's actually what I recommend to all new owners. There's a ton of good info in there and it even adresses the oil consumpion. (which is normal)

Second, I'd recommend checking out the search function on this forum. I find that there's an answer to almost any question a new owner might have. :)

You have had your 8 for more then a month now. Just where was the oil level on the dip stick? There are 1.8 quarts between the two marks so when it gets down below half you can add one quart. You don't have to keep toping it off, just don't let it get below the low mark. The manual is your friend....

New Yorker 03-24-2008 05:12 PM

The Renesis has an Oil Metering Pump (OMP) that injects a small quantity of oil into the engine to help lubricate its rotary parts by design. So no, the RX-8 DOES NOT "eat" oil. Historically, old engines, or poorly designed engines, or poorly maintained engines have been known to "eat" oil, which is NOT what the RX-8 does.

(Thread titles like this ("rx-8 Eating Oil?") are one of the reasons the RX-8 gets a bad reputation… just the words a newbie quickly researching the car needs to see. :banghead:)

I disagree.
If the title were, "OMG, RX-8 eats oil!!!!" then I could see it scaring newbies off. This at least has a "?" at the end which implies that he's asking. Newbies 'quickly searching' are inquisitive little creatures so I'm sure they'll click on the link and see our answers.

forums like this one are meant to help one another,or I'm wrong, all I'm saying this is the only place were you get bash just for asking a question, and your right the person should do a search, but if he did'nt ,at least give him the answer or tell to do a search or something not just stupid replies like that, just because somebody might be asking a dumb question does'nt mean there stupid maybe they just need some guidance, unless your were born with the almighty knowledge of the 8.

p.s.

Sorry if it seems I'm trying to hijack the thread,it is not my intecion at all.

Trust me, u need to stay on this forum longer to know what exactly is going on.

Im not sure about other forums, but on this one, you really really have to treat them like crap b4 these people will actually *search* for his next question's answer.

We have a new guy here, made 18 post since he join, and everytime he post is the question that has been answered like ten thousand times. We did told him to search, but did he listen ? Now no one wants to answer his questions anymore.

Truer words are seldom spoken....

When I was looking at the RX8's my local dealership had, one of them ended up having a missing hazard button. (It was just missing the little plastic cover piece) The sales person actually told me that it was a ipod connection....

u serious ?

damn it, Tomorrow Im gonna wake up as early as I could, try to finish everything early, then Im gonna head over just to see how dumb a *spokeswoman* can be.

Soapflake 03-25-2008 09:14 PM

Mine's been drinking oil pretty heavily since my switch over to Royal Purple. I'm pretty sure its the first time the car has had synthetic in it (33k miles at time of change) and Its been about 1500 miles and I've used about 5/8, almost 3/4 of a quart. Before the oil change my oil level wouldn't really drop :p

awaiting todays result of the bimbo test at the center !

But alil side note , a majority of people that speak at the center are hired speakers solely for that even and arent really affiliated with the company i.e. the middle class car field such as Mazda , honda , nissan , subaru ...etc.. the higher class car field such as bmw, Mbenz , Lambo...etc. are 99% of the time affiliated with the company.

quantum 03-27-2008 04:53 PM

You should only touch your dipstick every second fill-up; anything more than that is just playing with it. :icon_tup:

CarAndDriver 03-27-2008 09:42 PM

I dont even check my oil, I just top it off when changing oil, repeat the same step after 2 K. no problem

Learjet_Pilot 03-28-2008 11:36 AM

I just finished off my second bottle of oil after the first 2,100 miles of driving. So I'm figuring 1 qt every 1000 miles -- that's my gauge. Then again, others are getting 18 mpg.

tajabaho1 03-28-2008 11:50 AM

rx-8 eating oil?

*scooby* Hrealhy?

SHOWOFF 03-28-2008 11:51 AM

Mine has been using A LOT more oil than normal. I noticed this after my new engine was installed. Anyone else finding the same thing?
