There are outfits whose sole business is converting hard-top cars to convertibles. I bought a Toyota Celica GT convertible in 1989. It turns out that Toyota brought them over to California as coupes, and a shop in California did the conversion. Upped the price from $14k (coupe) to $20k; this was 1989, and with a bulk order, so I would think that it would be at least $10k, and probably more, to do a one-off now, and the four-door RX-8 would require extra work, I would think, to keep its chassis reasonably stiff without a top.

I love convertibles, and I like the RX-8, but I can't see spending $40k for an RX-8 convertible. But that's just me; obviously some folks think it's worth it, and more power to 'em.

That 8 convertible is too long. They'd have to lose the suicide doors... but that's not kool.

Right, they would have to go from 4 doors to 2 doors, just like the PT cruiser convertible, or A4 convertible. And that would conflict with their whole "4-door sports car" marketing angle, because you might confuse the general public by calling it that when some of them have only 2 doors.

Plus, it would be more expensive than the regular model, so I think for a convertible at that price point, most people would just buy an S2000.

Chop the rear doors, give it a 1.8L or 3 rotor and we have our 4th Gen RX-7 instead of an iffy convertable RX-8

It wouldn't, but with the type of font used for the badge it could easily be confused.

Prototypes are usually painted dark grey or black and masked with tape etc. But before a car hits the dealers, you have a period of several months when the series version is tested on public roads and in the late stage of this, you'll even see cars with logos driven by employees of the manufacturer (at least that's the case with BMW and Mercedes here).

i dont understand the love for the idea ofa convertible rx8. it would ruin the 50/50 weight distribution, it would ruin the body's stiffness, and judging by that picture, it would also look like an s2000 with down syndrome.

im pretty sure that pic is legit, its been posted on this board a million times already, and i've looked at it at least a half million times.

i just think its a one off custom... somewhere someone mentioned something about there being a company in california that even offers this service (rx8 convertible conversion). that pic is definitely japanese, and i wouldnt doubt that there is the capability to do a custom rx8 conversion.

but like i said, it would ruin all the handling characteristics of this car, it would ruin the safety rating of this car, and it would definitely look like a retarded s2000...

I was less then 5 feet away from it at a stop light for a good 2 minutes, giving me sufficient time to get over the shock and review the car.
