RX-8 Collecting dust

It would seem I got my 8 just to keep it in my garage. After buying my 8 and putting 3,000 miles on it, I decided to buy me a work car. My wife is kind mad since she didn't see the need to buy a 30k car to begin with. I paid 2k for a hyndai and I drive that thing every where. Saves me fuel and keeps my 8 looking clean and new. I do drive it here and there but I find myself not wanting to drive it in order to keep it clean. I love everything about my 8, so why not drive it everyday and show it off? Does this make sence to anyone out there? Maybe I should start collecting cars...

LOL--I feel you--I have a 2nd car--99 Millenia S but it is the one that ends up sitting--mainly because its for sale and I'm not trying to accelerate its already steep depreciating plummet. I wish I had disposable income so I could get a 2nd vehicle as an A to B.

I also have a 2nd car to go to work, a Toyota Camry 3.0L V6, since I travel 230km per day to work.

My RX-8 is a weekend/track ride. Why not? My baby (2 mths old) absolutely loves the car. She stops crying as soon as my right foot hits the pedal. :p

I also have a second car (Jeep Grand Cherokee) but can hardly stand to drive it because my '8 is so damn much fun. Now my poor Jeep is lonely unless the roads get cruddy.

I once did what Restob is doing. I had a sportscar that sat in the garage and I drove a sedan to work everyday. If I could do it all over again, the sedan would sit and the fun car would rack up the miles. Cars are made to be driven and enjoyed. The RX-8 is a great little car but it's not going to appreciate in value by letting it sit.

You bought the car because it's fun to drive, not fun to have sitting in the garage. Drive it. You'll thank yourself every day.

i traded in my mr2 spyder (garaged) and my mazda 626 for my 8 . I thought at the time i only needed one car and the 8 had it all . BUT , now i find myself looking for a second car for work. I like to keep my 8 clean and i have already put 10000 miles in 8 months. So yes it makes since to me just make sure you take the eight out as often as possible. I drove my spyder any day that was nice and only put 40000 miles on it in 3 years. At this rate my 8 while have a least 60000 in 3 years and this i do not want so i Will have a second car soon.

Finding myself in the same delima, have a 2001 stratus RT with only 20K on it, lease is up feb. 1st. Debating for 1200 for snow tires and wheels or a few grand plus insurance for a beater. MMM, hadn't driven the RT since I got the 8, washed and did a cheap wax on it, snowed the next day and was covered with salt chit. Thought, damn, that could be my baby covered in that crap!

Whew...I'm not the only one!! I have a 2nd car for work I drive alot for work and hate putting work miles on my 8. The trouble is, since I bought my 8 10 months ago I have only put 3300 miles on it!! I just need to drive it more. Leave the Sable at home and jump in the 8. I'm so paranoid of door dings, road ****, smashing it!! I guess I need to suck it up and enjoy what I pay for every month.

I'm actually considering buying a used motorcycle (Honda CBR perhaps?) to putt around town with on the weekends, and leave the Rx8 for weekend and long distance driving.

Ride pedal power mate... go for your quads not your bucks.

hehe I do 5000 km + (or 3500 miles) a month going back and forth from work. In that rate,

Mazda RX-8
I am going for 1.5L of rotary oil per month,
500L of premium petrol,
and 1/10 of tyre every month. :o

Not justify.

Toyota Camry V6
I can go 7.5L/100km in my Camry
No engine oil change before 20000km.
Tyre are 60% after 100000km.

I rather save the money there for mods. Which is about $1500 AUD I just calculated.

I have a second car too. The problem is, even though I don't drive my RX-8 to the store, or anywhere else useful, i managed to rack up 9,000 miles on it since April.

Good to see other people have my dilemma....I, too, have a second car....a 91 toyota pickup that I drive to and from San Diego for work...it is a champ...but I sure do miss the 8 when I am in it. I always take the 8 on Friday...everyone wants to ride with me to lunch...can you blame them?......When the weekend hits...its all 8 all the time....so I still put my fair share of miles on my baby.....To talk myself into driving my 8 more....I always think...How much more will you get for the 8 when you go to sell it if it has 5-10k less miles?....then I feel guilty for thinking about selling it :-)

Thumbs up

I have my 8 as my second car also. I do not feel it is strange (and my wife says it was a waste of money also). I commute 120 miles a day and at that rate I will break 100K in 3-4 years (including pleasure driving). I can't see beating the car up that quick. Anyway the winter salt will also destroy the car. I was going to sell my 92 Lumina (with 145K miles), but the book value was $1500. That is what I would of needed to but new rims and tires for my 8 to drive in the winter. So I kept the car. Besdies the winter, I drive the 8 about 2 days a week to work and then on the weekends. It stays garaged all the other time and it has looked show room fresh since I got it.

I also have a 2002 Town & Country (for the wife) and a 2001 Altima (for whoever). My wife mostly drives the Altima to keep the T&C looking good and keeping the mileage down. My wife says we are like a used car delaer ( 2 licensed drivers and 4 cars).

I drive my 8 every day, weather permitting. I only have a 16 mile round trip commute, so I still won't be racking up a lot of miles. I've had mine since July and I am just now taking it in for the 5000 mile service tomorrow. I wouldn't normally have put that many miles on it, but I have taken it on a few longish trips. Once spring gets here, I plan on putting more miles on it. Lot's of twisty roads around here.

I don't see how you can leave your 8 at home, mind you I don't have far to go to work. I'd like to spend more time in my 8! I just love driving it.

Everyone send a dollar to my Paypal account and I can easily get a beater car

When I'm bored I drive. I often commute from NorCal to SoCal for my GF (soon to be wife :D ) too. As of now I've had the thing for 10 months and 1 week. I'm at 30,400 miles. I drive the thing hard too. Runs like a charm, seems like the gas mileage improves every month and it is just as fast- if not faster than it was at 5000 miles...

I have a short commute to work and park in a garage at home and at work - 6200 miles since Feb. I can't see letting it sit at home, too much fun to rev and drive! (production cars rarely increase in value - hell, we lost 20% of the value rolling off the dealer lot!)

As you get a bit older, you will realize that life is too short not to be using the things you have. I'd hate my tombstone to say "had an 8, but never drove it."

I put 92 miles a day on my car for work, and drive it as much as I can on the weekends or at night to go out. I used to only have a 8 mile commute every day with ocasional visits to my woman, and even so managed to rack up 25K miles my first year with the car. I expect to be at the end of my warranty by this time next year. I dont even want to drive her car if we go out, even if it is more convenient sometimes. Why would I buy this wonderfull car and leave it? Heck no! I'm driving this bad boy into the ground! Sure every new rock chip is a stab in the heart, but on the other hand it means I have an excuse for a new front end or a new paintjob all the sooner :D

I have a second car (95 Firebird) for rain/foul weather/shopping/idiots out there uses. Am in the process of selling it to buy a small beater pickup for the occasional Home Depot run. No chemicals allowed in my RX-8.

When I have to keep my 8 in the garage for any of the reasons I mentioned, I am REAL disappointed. Although these breaks make me appreciate the next sunny/twisty road/cruisin' kinda drive ahead.

My 8 is my second car, still managed to put 12,500 miles in the first year! 500 over the lease allowance! My first car was driven 15k so the 8 isn't second by much. Guess I like it ;>)

I am buying an RX-8 next September, as soon as my daily driver is paid off (that is my deal with the wife). This way I can keep my daily driver, as the RX-8 will be for nice weather and weekends. One, they salt the roads to hell in the winter here, and two, I love a clean car. I couldn't stand to see my RX-8 with salt all over it for four months of the year. I use to have two RX-7's that I drove year around, and it was my dream not to have to do that.

Believe me, it's been long and hard wait.
