rusty oil pan

i was changing the oil in my 05 RX-8 the other day and i found something that caught my attention right away. i noticed that the oil pan has developed some nasty rust and that one spot is near coming through. the car has 37K original miles and is not driven in the winter. the first owner who had the car until 29K miles must have driven the car in the salt and snow. this is the second oil change i have done on the car and i don't remember seeing anything like this last oil change. has anyone else experienced similar issues with rust early on? i ave to say that i'm quite dissapointed with the overall condition of the rusted parts underneath. even my 25 and 30 year old ohio driven RX-7's dont have these issues. here's a pic of the oil pan i took with my cell phone while i was under there:

salt will do that.

Just clean with gunk, then hose off, then engine paint

its too far gone for just paint. i considered taking it off, shot blasting it, repaiting any holes by welding and then using por 15 as an external sealer. i may just replace it and por 15 the new pan. its just odd to me that it would rust so quickly

i looked into that route. but it was almost $400 with shipping and since i don't race my car and do not plan to modify it in the slightest, its really not something i can justify spending $400 on. don't get me wrong, its a really nice part and it was tempting.

list was around $130 and i talked to the dealer about them replacing it at their expense. of course they told me to **** off and i expected that but i figured i'd try that route. my parts guy sells me parts at 10% over cost if i'm paying cash or 20% off if i used my dealer account or a credit card.

Por 15 sucks. Get Hammerite Rust cap. Por 15 starts to flake off after a year or two. This look like dmg from maybe someone hitting a deer or critter or big rock then no oil or wd40 to slow rust.

no damage at all. the rust formed in bubbles with no damage to the paint of the oil pan.

I just replaced my oil pan a few months ago (rusted a hole right thru it). The new one cost about $170 with tax, and is starting to show signs of rust bubbling already, its like its coming from the inside out because the paint is fully intact and still shiny....

The price I was quoted in Vegas was $197.00 plus freight. The total was to be $240.00.
