Rusty brakes?
My RX-8 has rust on the brakes -- not the discs, but the brakes. What's up with this?
|
That is normal.

Rusty brakes
Normal for what? I've never seen thios on any car I've owned before, nor on the cars produced by companies I've worked for -- Saab, Jag, Ferrari/Maserati.
Shouldn't this be a warranty item? Again, its not the discs, but the rotors... |

Rotors?? Inside part of it?
|
The RX-8 rotors are plated and usually only rust where the pads scrub them. The calipers are painted black, but it's rather thin to allow heat to escape, I presume, so they may rust a bit in corrosive environments.
You need to tell us in more detail where you are seeing the rust. |
Or better take pictures and post them.

greenish anti corrosion? I thought they did that just for the looks.

Here you go....
green colored brakes. No black paint to be found.....:( |
What I get from the pic is that the surface of the rotor where the pads meet the surface have turned a little orange. I get this SEVERLY after each wash. Quick fix right after washing is to drive the car for a little while; I drag the brake pedal ever-so-slightly, as to create a little friction at that point and dry off the rotor. Comes back silver as can be. If I don't dry it in that manner, the next morning I have to break the pads loose; feels like I still have the parking brake set. (Strange feeling...)

Perhaps he means the center of the brake. All 4 of mine have terrible rust in the centers . Ive only had the car for a week and a half and this has been my only complaint thus far. My dealer wants me to bring it in so they can have a look see but as of yet I havent been able bring it in. I may just paint them when I go ahead and paint the calipers, which by the way are not black;)

yeah, the rotors and calipers are my biggest beef with the rx-8, they should not be looking this fugly!
They also create a ton of dust, making my wheels constantly dirty. |
This is all very true...I was not happy with the color or appearance of the rotors/brake assembly.-Until I painted the rotors black (inside part) and the calipers red with G2...The outcome in awesome and really makes the rest of the car!
|
hey TPNova1 can you post a pic??
i was thinking of painting my calipers as well and since you have the same car color as me i wanted to see how it looks. |
Poor pic, but the red calipers = 5 coats.
The rotor has 4 coats of black around the center area that rusts, as well as the outer edge. I'll have to snap some better pics one of these days. The problem is, anytime I wash the car and it's ready for pics, the water makes the exposed rotor area turn rusty orange, and I no longer want to take a pic of it.. |
cool! thanks.. do you have another pic from a bit farther away?
just something to get an idea what the red would look like on the silver. i am just worried a bit on the the red calipers and the silver.. yeah i know I am anal.. |
Check it red calipers on Silver
HEY, you're quite welcome......
|
Close up....

Close up........

It is funny you ask. The red does stick out - and draw attention to them. HOWEVER, keep in mind the rear of the car has lots of red from the tail lights, and so even a monochromatic silver car ends up looking very sharp even with the red calipers because it all goes together.
I would not recommend trying the same thing with yellow, for example, because there is no other yellow on the car. |
thanks guys!!
i was debating either the black with maybe polaks red rx-8 template or straight red. looks great thanks again!! |
If I were you, I'd paint the calipers silver, then use the stensil, and paint the rest of the calipers red.
it looks very sharp like that |
hmmm, interesting , I never thought of it that way.
